Résultats de DL 2Q09. Pas génial, on s'y attendait. Pour la suite, un analyste de Morgan S considère comme risquée la stratégie d'ouverture à l'international. Et Northwest est maintenant une filiale de Delta.

-----------

ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines Inc. reports second-quarter results on Wednesday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.

OVERVIEW: The Atlanta-based company, which is the world's biggest airline operator, is expected to post a loss for the April-June quarter.

The news would follow a sizable second-quarter loss reported last week by American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp. Several other major carriers also were expected to post losses for the three-month period amid a steep drop-off in business travel due to the weak economy, which has overshadowed the benefit airlines have reaped from lower
fuel prices.

Delta is cutting more capacity to weather the downturn, and other airlines are expected to follow suit.

Earlier in the year, analysts had expected Delta to be profitable in the second quarter. But the decline in revenue the industry has faced has persisted. Analysts still expect Delta to be profitable, on an adjusted basis, in the third quarter, which began July 1, and in the fourth quarter, which begins Oct. 1 and runs through the end of the year.

Airlines have had to significantly discount seats and offer deals for business travelers to lure passengers during the summer, which is usually a busy time for carriers. Add-on fees also have been a key revenue source for the airlines.

As the industry heads into its slow period in the fall, some airlines may be forced to make deeper cuts.
Delta already plans to cut international capacity by 15 percent starting in September.

There has been concern that one or two major carriers might not make it past early next year if the economy
doesn't improve or weakens further, though analysts generally consider Delta healthier than most because of its global network and the amount of cash it has on hand.

Delta subsidiaries include Northwest Airlines, Comair, Compass and Mesaba. It has hubs in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York-JFK, Salt Lake City, Amsterdam and Tokyo-Narita. The company has about 80,000 employees.

BY THE NUMBERS: Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, on average, expect Delta to post a loss of 27 cents a share for the second quarter on sales of $6.99 billion. Analysts' projections generally exclude one-time items. The airline posted a net loss of $2.64 per share on revenue of $5.5 billion in the same period a year ago, before completing its acquisition of Northwest.

ANALYST TAKE: A recent Morgan Stanley research note said Delta's strategic shift towards international is a serious near-term risk. There has been a big drop-off in international travel. Delta is now moving to shed capacity overseas, while it had moved to expand international capacity in the past. Still, investors could benefit down the line, the firm said.

"Though we are not bulls on the Delta/Northwest synergy opportunity — which we expect to ultimately be competed away — recent selling pressure has created an opportunity for investors to get a very cheap 'synergy option' should the opportunity prove more powerful in 2010 than we expect," Morgan Stanley said. "Furthermore, Delta's status as a likely survivor makes valuation particularly attractive for investors willing to look through the cycle."

WHAT'S AHEAD: Delta is in the process of shedding pilot jobs after offering a retirement incentive program. The union says 215 pilots have accepted the offer. Delta, which has cut other jobs through voluntary severance programs, says it continues to monitor its staffing levels in light of the soft demand for air travel.
Executives have said they are working hard to avoid involuntary furloughs.

STOCK PERFORMANCE: Delta shares fell 2 percent during the second quarter. The stock closed at $5.91 on April 1 and ended the quarter June 30 at $5.79.

Optimiste

D' Airwise :

Delta Air Lines boosted its operating margin forecast for the third quarter, citing lower fuel costs, and said other financial measures were trending in line with or better than year-earlier and second-quarter levels.

In a federal filing on Monday, the company said it expects operating margin of between 3 percent and 4 percent for the third quarter, and break-even operating margin for the full year.

On July 22, Delta projected third-quarter operating margin of 1 percent to 3 percent.

The higher forecast is a positive, said Basili Alukos, a Morningstar analyst.

"All the airlines have improved, mostly from a cost perspective, just because fuel has fallen significantly and they've cut capacity," Alukos said.

Helane Becker, an analyst with Jesup & Lamont Securities, said Delta's projected load factor performance suggested bookings are strengthening. "We believe that business traffic is starting to return to the market," she said in a
research note.

Delta said load factors were expected to be about 82 percent for September and October, in line with or slightly above year-earlier levels.

Still, Alukos said he was surprised that Delta indicated its unrestricted liquidity was continuing to fall.
Delta projected that measure would stand at USD$4.6 billion for the full year, compared with USD$5 billion for the third quarter.

The airline said it expects a consolidated fuel price, net of hedges, of USD$2.14 per gallon for the third quarter, USD$2.05 for the fourth quarter, and USD$2.13 for the full year. In July it forecast USD$2.17 for the third quarter.

Delta said revenue per available seat mile, an important measure, would show a smaller decline in the third quarter than in the second quarter.

Delta and other carriers have been cutting capacity and jobs to lower costs as the recession hurts air travel.

Delta said it expects system capacity to be down 4 percent to 5 percent for the third quarter from a year earlier.

"For the legacy carriers, the only way improvement is going to come is when they see top-line growth," Alukos said.

DL parvient à boucler une ligne de + USD 2 billions ( milliards )

De quoi assurer le futur et la digestion de NWA

ATLANTA, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Air Lines today announced it has closed $2.1 billion of financing transactions, marking a significant step toward addressing the company's 2010 debt maturities and further strengthening its liquidity position.

"The competitive terms and strong demand for this financing reflect the market's confidence in Delta and our financial strength," said Ed Bastian, Delta's president. "With these transactions, we've addressed more than 40 percent of our 2010 maturities and generated an incremental $600 million to bolster our best-in-class liquidity position."

The $2.1 billion transaction will generate $600 million in incremental liquidity after refinancing $1.5 billion from Northwest's bank credit and revolving credit facilities. Delta now expects its unrestricted liquidity at Sept. 30, 2009 to
be $5.6 billion. The total transaction has an effective yield of 9.2 percent.

Bastian continued, "We'd like to thank our banks - Barclays Capital, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs,
JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and UBS Investment Bank - for their partnership and commitment to helping Delta secure our capital needs."

The new financing transactions are secured by liens against Delta's Pacific franchise, which includes route authorities, slots and gate leaseholds.
