United Airlines' First Boeing 787 Dreamliner Rolls Out of Factory
CHICAGO, Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- United Airlines today announced that Boeing completed the final assembly of the airline's first 787 Dreamliner Wednesday evening, finishing the first major step in the aircraft's production. United will be the first North American carrier to take a 787 delivery, with plans to introduce the first of 50 Dreamliners into revenue service in 2012.
While in final assembly, the aircraft moved through four factory positions, including the final aircraft body join, landing gear installation, weight-on-wheels testing and installation of interior components and systems. Over the next several months, the aircraft will move to the next phase of completion, which includes final cabin configuration, installation of engines and painting.
Boeing will configure United's first 787 with 36 seats in BusinessFirst, 63 seats in Economy Plus and 120 seats in Economy. The aircraft's use of light-weight composites, together with more electric systems, modern engines and improved aerodynamic design, allows it to fly farther, faster and more efficiently. Customers will experience greater comfort with improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems, among other passenger-friendly features.
United Continental Holdings' subsidiaries Continental and United each ordered 25 Dreamliners. With expanded range capabilities, greater fuel efficiency and superior operating economics, the 787 will allow United to target new long-haul markets and replace older, less-efficient widebody aircraft.

Deux réflexions :787 Delays Force United To Revise 2012 Plan
Another production delay apparently has hit Boeing’s troubled 787 program, and at least one customer, United Continental Holdings, is paring back its delivery schedule for 2012 to account for the issue.
Last month, United Continental detailed a plan that added six Boeing 787-8s and 19 737-900ERs to its fleet in 2012, but on Wednesday the plan had shrunk to 19 737s and just five 787s. United Continental is not offering any explanation for the revision, and a Boeing spokesperson could not reached for comment. However a source with knowledge of the situation tells Aviation Week the slip is attributed to a production issue, and that it is unclear if the delayed aircraft will be added to United Continental’s 2013 fleet schedule.
The United Continental revision coincides with comments from Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe that another delay in his carrier’s 787 delivery scheduled would not be a surprise. In July, an Air New Zealand executive said a delay announced that month would defer delivery of the airline’s first 787-9 to 2014, some four year later than planned when the carrier placed its order. On Wednesday, Reuters quoted Fyfe as saying, “We would not be surprised to see further delays, but we have not yet been advised formally if there are any further delays.”
United Continental is promoting the addition of the “game changing” 787 addition to its fleet and its status as the widebody’s first North American operator. As details about the delay were emerging, the airline was issuing a news release about the final assembly completion of its first 787, and how the “expanded range capabilities, greater fuel efficiency and superior operating economics…will allow United to target new long-haul markets and replace older, less efficient widebody aircraft.”

Airbus Expects United To Place A380 Order
United Continental Holdings is contemplating an Airbus A380 order, and while a final deal will take some time, Airbus expects the U.S. airline to adopt the double-decker for its extensive Asian network.
Airbus Chief Operating Officer-Customer John Leahy, speaking with Aviation Week yesterday after a market forecast presentation in Washington, asserted that United President and CEO Jeffery Smisek has changed his previously held view that the widebody was inappropriate for U.S. operators and now saw possibilities for the A380 in the new United fleet.
However, the Airbus executive issued a caveat when pressed on a pending United deal, noting, “I’m not saying there is an order soon, but United understands that if it wants to have a major presence in Asia it needs the A380.”
Airbus considers Boeing 747 operators as likely A380 customers, and in North America that means United and Delta Air Lines are candidates. However, Delta is no longer a target, having told Airbus it wants to focus on smaller widebodies, says Leahy. “That leaves United as our target,” he added.
Despite its popularity in Asia and the Middle East, the A380 so far has failed to generate much interest in the Americas, with North American carriers favoring a high-frequency schedule using smaller aircraft and Latin operators simply aware that the region’s current infrastructure is insufficient for such a large-capacity aircraft. But Leahy is adamant that the A380 will be adopted in the region, especially in the U.S. as traffic demands outstrip efforts to upgrade the country’s air traffic control system.
“I flew into JFK [John F. Kennedy International Airport] and it looked pretty crowded,” Leahy said during the presentation, which predicts a doubling of U.S. and Canadian demand in the next 15 years. “Are we going to double movements? That is why we are offering our A380,” he noted.
Airbus’s 20-year forecast is optimistic that North American carriers will realize this predicament and order 206 ultra-widebody aircraft (i.e. the A380) between 2011 and 2031 to relieve some of the pressure being placed on the largest, namely U.S., airports. At the same time, the region’s operators are also expected to order 4,970 single-aisle aircraft with more than 100 seats and 1,140 twin-aisle aircraft, spending some $648 billion at list price.

Rebonjour. Merci, Jeannot.

IAE announces long-term service agreement with United
SINGAPORE AIR SHOW (February 15, 2011) – IAE announced today that it has signed a Fleet Hour Agreement (FHA) with United Airlines effective January 1, 2012. The seven-year contract includes IAE’s V2500 engines installed on 152 existing Airbus A320 and A319 aircraft.
Noté. Et à noter.
United took delivery of its first A320 aircraft in November 1993.
“At United, we are committed to delivering a safe, reliable product to our customers in a cost-effective manner, and we believe this agreement with IAE for our V2500 engines helps us meet that goal,” said Jim Keenan, senior vice president – Technical Operations at United.
“IAE’s aftermarket services offerings are designed to keep V2500 engines maintained to the highest standards,” said IAE Executive Vice President of Customer Business Jim Guiliano. “United is among our largest customers, and this FHA will keep their engines performing at their peak with optimum levels of fuel burn, reliability and maintenance cost for years to come.”
He continued: “Our customers are increasingly finding that V-ServicesSM aftermarket solutions offer the best substantial long-term benefits.”
Currently, more than 3,000 V2500 engines are covered by IAE FHAs, including engines sold but not yet delivered. FHAs are one offering under IAE’s V-Services. FHAs ensure the engines are properly maintained and upgraded to enhanced configurations as they approach milestones in their lifecycles.

Sans commentaire.United Airlines disclosed that it has 160 options for Boeing 737 Max 9 and 737-900ER aircraft on top of its order for 150 of the aircraft, in a regulatory filing last night.
The options are split between 100 for the 737 Max 9 and 60 for the 737-900ER. The aircraft would have CFM Leap-1B and CFM56-7 engines, respectively.
Chicago-based United announced a firm order for 100 737 Max 9s and 50 737-900ERs with deliveries from 2013 to 2022 on 12 July.
The airline says that it will use the 737s to replace older aircraft.
United now has firm orders and options for 319 737s, according to Flightglobal's Ascend database.

[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] celebrated the rollout of its first Boeing 787-8 in the special "swoop" livery at the manufacturer's Everett, Washington plant today.
The Chicago-based carrier is the US launch customer of the type and will take delivery of the aircraft in September. The plane rolled out of the paint shop on 31 July. It is registration number N20904 and manufacturer's serial number 34824.
"We have been awaiting this day for a while and it's worth every bit of the wait," says Dave Hilfman, senior vice president of sales at United, during the ceremony. "It's going to be extraordinarily successful for United."
United will receive four 787-8s before the end of the year, according to the airline.
The carrier has firm orders for 36 787-8s and 14 787-9s, options for 10 787-8s and a letter of intent for 50 of either variant, according to Flightglobal's Ascend database.
United will first fly the aircraft on domestic routes before placing it on its existing route between Houston Intercontinental and Lagos, Nigeria. The [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] will be used to launch new service between Denver and Tokyo Narita in March 2013.
OK.
Configuration plutôt bien réfléchie !The airlines intends to rotate the 787-8 through all of its domestic hubs that have widebody service before it shifts to international service, says Hilfman. This includes all of the airline's hubs except Cleveland.
United's 219-seat 787-8 has 36 fully lie-flat business class seats in a two-two-two configuration, 72 economy plus seats and 111 economy seats in a three-three-three configuration.
All of the economy seats are a little more than 17 inches wide while economy plus seats have at least 34 inches of pitch and economy seats 31 inches of pitch. BE Aerospace supplied the economy seats.
Panasonic supplies the in-seat inflight entertainment system on United's 787. Audio video on demand is available at each seat.
Power outlets are located at each seat in the business class cabin and there are two for every three seats in the main cabin except for in the bulkhead rows where there are three outlets.
The airline is working "aggressively" with Boeing to find an inflight wifi solution for the 787, it says.
United executives repeatedly cite the positive impact of the lower cabin pressure on the 787-8 to passenger comfort. Senior vice president of marketing and distribution Mark Bergsrud describes as the difference between being in Vail or Colorado Springs. Vail is at 2,445m above sea level while Colorado Springs is only 1,832m above sea level.

United takes first 787
By: Edward Russell Washington DC - 24 / 09 / 2012
[quote] United Airlines took ownership of its first Boeing 787-8 on 22 September, the carrier announced today.
It says that it will fly the aircraft, which is registered N20904, to its Houston Intercontinental hub later this week.
"As the North American launch customer, we are delighted to be getting our first 787 Dreamliner," says Jeff Smisek, chief executive of United. "As we continue to build the world's leading airline, we are excited for our customers and co-workers to experience this game-changing aircraft."
The Chicago-based Star Alliance carrier will initially fly the 787 on routes between Houston and its other domestic hubs, beginning on 4 November. It will launch international service with the aircraft on 4 December.

-------------------
United Said to Study Biggest Airbus A350 to Replace Boeing 747s
United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL) is in talks with Airbus SAS about buying A350-1000 jets, a step toward the first U.S. purchase for the planemaker’s largest twin-engine model, people familiar with talks said.
The world’s biggest airline is considering the 350-seat plane to replace older Boeing Co. (BA) 747s, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. United already has agreed to buy 25 of the mid-sized A350-900 variant under a 2009 deal that included 25 of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners.
A United order would help Toulouse, France-based Airbus in its effort to loosen Boeing’s grip on the market for large twin- aisle aircraft. Airbus had suffered cancellations and a four- year A350-1000 order drought until July. United has said it’s also looking at what Boeing will offer as a successor to its 777, the Chicago-based planemaker’s biggest two-engine model.
Airbus is promising the A350-1000’s first delivery by 2017 and promotes it as 25 percent more efficient than a 777-300ER, partly because it uses more lightweight composite materials. That timeline may give Airbus a head start of three years over a 777 replacement, because Boeing hasn’t committed to a schedule beyond saying the new plane would be in service by decade’s end.
A competition with Boeing would depend partly on how soon Airbus can free up delivery slots for the A350-1000 and how fast Boeing can develop the jet dubbed the 777-X, said two of the people. The A350-1000’s list price is $320.6 million, while a 777-X probably would command more than the 777-300ER’s $315 million. Jet buyers usually get discounts.
Customer Discussions
Airbus declined to comment, saying discussions with potential buyers are private. Christen David, a spokeswoman for Chicago-based United, said: “We continuously have discussions with our aircraft manufacturers.”
Boeing is “engaging with our customers to define” the 777-X and when it might become available, Karen Crabtree, a spokeswoman, said by e-mail.
“While we haven’t set a firm timeline or launched the program, we’ve consistently talked about a potential market entry around the end of the decade,” she said.
The A350-1000 went on sale in 2006 and was originally promised for 2015. Airbus delayed the airliner two years ago to add a more powerful Rolls-Royce Group Plc engine and work on the landing gear and wing. Airbus has won 88 orders for the plane, compared with 352 for the A350-900, which is undergoing final assembly and is due to enter service in late 2014.
United’s Fleet
United’s main jet fleet totaled 701 planes at the end of 2011, according to a regulatory filing. Airbus’s share was only 22 percent, and none of the aircraft in service were the wide- bodies that typically provide planemakers with their highest profit margins.
The carrier hasn’t bought twin-aisle planes since its creation in the 2010 merger between former United parent UAL Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Smisek was part of the leadership team at Continental in the 1990s when it transitioned to an all-Boeing lineup.
Boeing planes accounted for 55 percent of the 2,349 wide- body jets on order worldwide at the end of September, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Airbus had 54 percent of the single-aisle backlog for the two companies, the data show.
Shrinking Boeing’s lead at United would be a second U.S. coup for Airbus. In 2011, AMR Corp. (AAMRQ)’s American Airlines ended its recent all-Boeing history by splitting a single-aisle jet order. Airbus won the deal thanks to a more fuel efficient version of its A320 aircraft, pressuring Boeing to follow suit and offer its own upgrade on the best-selling 737 model.
United’s A350-900 order came before the merger, so a new deal would expand Airbus’s foothold at the airline and may pave the way for an eventual purchase of A380 double-decker aircraft. Senior vice president for finance, Gerry Laderman, said in an August interview that the airline couldn’t “dismiss the potential” of such a large jet, given the size of its network.
---------------------
