Julian Cook veut lancer une LCC long courrier en 2013 avec des A 330 en configuration haute densité

Founder and former CEO of Swiss regional airline Baboo Julian Cook is planning to launch a new airline called FlyA in summer 2013.

Cook told ATW the carrier will “basically be a long-haul, low-cost, Europe-based airline that will apply the low-cost model. We are looking at initial fares of €69 ($86) one-way, without tax,” he said.

FlyA will operate Airbus A330-300s, densely configured with 400-440 seats, between Europe and North America.

Cook aims to launch FlyA in June next year with “at least a couple” of A330-400s. “We haven’t got an exact [launch] date, but we are talking with a few leasing companies to determine whether it will be June [2013] or another month. If we slip by a month, it won’t be the end of the world,” he said.

The start-up will be majority-owned by European interests, but Cook added: “We are also talking with non-Europeans. Some of the investors we are talking to have aviation expertise, but they are not necessarily based in Europe.” He is in “advanced discussions” and is hoping to close the funding soon.

FlyA was originally going to be UK-based, flying to destinations in India and Pakistan, but this plan has changed.

Now there are three possible countries where FlyA could be located and the airline will launch with transatlantic operations to the US East Coast.

“The initial plan was to have a UK-focused airline, but with air passenger duty (APD) being raised we revised the plan. We need to offer a significantly lower absolute price to stimulate demand. Taxes are a huge barrier and a threat to low-cost carriers in general.”

Cook is looking to register the company in a western European country that has attractive tax and labor conditions.

He has rejected Switzerland because the high cost of living would increase labor costs and Switzerland is not part of the EU-US Open Skies agreement. Likewise, Germany is “not really a focus” for the initial phase.

“We are looking for the best mix of fiscal conditions for the company and employees. I see three options. It could be a UK company and start flying from another country to the USA. We have also spoken to Luxemburg and would like to talk to Ireland. Those are the three that we are considering, but there might be another one or two that we would look at,” he said.

The long-haul, low-cost model remains unproven as earlier this year AirAsia X pulled its European services (ATW Daily News, Jan. 13).

Cook recently had a “pretty long chat” with AirAsiaX CEO Azran Osman-Rani in Singapore about potential challenges.

“One of the things which we identified, and he confirmed, is that the business model does not work for super long-haul, over 10 hours.”

Therefore, FlyA will deploy A330s on six- to nine-hr. missions.

“Operating an A340 to London and Paris is much more fuel-thirsty.

The other key thing is that, simply put, the origin and destination traffic between London and Kuala Lumpur is relatively low, compared with some of the markets we have looked at. It comes down to absolute versus relative price. If you look at super long-haul, it is €500-€600 per ticket.

Even if this is cheaper [than competitors], it is still a high amount for people to fork out.”

Cook, who is hoping to grow FlyA to 10 aircraft within four years, resigned from Baboo in December 2007 and sold his shares in the company in March 2008.

Merci
