Bworldonline : Wednesday, September 2, 2009 |
MANILA, PHILIPPINES

Revenues grew by a fifth to P11.39 billion, from last year’s P9.39 billion following additional routes, an increase in flight frequencies, and the acquisition of additional Airbus A320 and ATR72-500 aircraft.

Cebu Pacific lost P15.66 million in the first half of 2008. The airline said last year’s net loss was mainly due to foreign exchange losses, pointing out that on a purely operating basis, Cebu Pacific still made P900 million from January to June 2008.

For the first half of 2009, cost and operating expenses went up to P9.28 billion, from year-ago level of P8.19 billion. Foreign exchange losses recognized in the first six months only amounted to P223.38 million, a 76.7% drop from last year’s P958.72 million.

Fuel hedging gains went up significantly during the period to P471.43 million, from P77.11 million last year.

"We are very happy that despite the economic recession, and the dynamic changes in foreign exchange and fuel costs, we remain a profitable and financially strong airline,"
Candice A. Iyog, Cebu Pacific vice-president for marketing and distribution, said in a statement yesterday.

She noted that the airline’s low-cost carrier strategy has been effective in encouraging people to
travel by plane for both business and leisure.

The budget airline operates 21 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft and eight ATR72-500 aircraft. It expects delivery of 17 more Airbus and two ATR aircraft in the last quarter of 2009 until 2014.

In contrast, Cebu Pacific’s chief rival Philippine Airlines (PAL) had reported losses, announcing work force cuts and reducing international operations.

It will also sell a Boeing 737 to raise some $8 million to $10 million and will hold plane purchases except for Boeing 777-300ERs to be delivered this year.

The Lucio A. Tan-led airline lost $301.4 million for its fiscal year ending March 2009 as a result of higher expenses brought about by the cost of operating more flights and last year’s record-high fuel prices. Fuel accounted for 44% of the flag carrier’s expenses.

The carrier earned $30.6 million a year earlier.

PAL recorded a 21.3% decrease in net income for the quarter ending June 2009 to $35.5 million, versus the year-ago level of $45.1 million. — Jeremiah F. de Guzman

Cebu communique.

Cebu Pacific noted this week that it is now the Philippines' largest airline based on number of passengers flown on domestic and international routes.

According to Civil Aeronautics Board data, CEB flew 2.45 million total passengers in the first quarter, nearly 110,000
more than Philippine Airlines, which carried 2.34 million systemwide during the period.

CEB became the No. 1 domestic carrier last year when it captured just over 50% of the market and it held a 51% domestic share in the first quarter.

VP-Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog said the airline's
"consistent focus and commitment to offering the lowest fares for value service continues to pay off. We expect to grow even more in the coming years as we take delivery of more brand-new planes, which we will use to expand our capacity, increase frequencies and fly to more local and foreign destinations."

CEB plans to take 22 A320s between October 2010 and 2014, bringing the number of A320s it operates to 43.

It also operates eight ATR 72-500s. In 2009 it flew 8.8 million passengers, up 31% year-over-year.

It forecasts that it will carry 10 million this year and 15 million by 2013.

Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) flew over 2.8 million passengers from January to March 2011, posting a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2010.

This first quarter (Q1) result keeps the airline on track in achieving its 12 million-passenger target this 2011. CEB carried close to 10.5 million passengers for the full year 2010.

“We attribute this first quarter growth to flight frequency increases to key international markets, brought about by the additional capacity from our brand-new Airbus A320.
Our 15th Airbus A320 was delivered just last January, increasing our fleet size to 33 aircraft,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

CEB’s Q1 growth was driven by international traffic, which is up 32%.

The airline flew 672,456 international passengers from January to March 2011, compared to 511,178 passengers flown during the same period in 2010.

The airline doubled its Manila-Incheon (Seoul) services, making it twice daily last January 2011. It also added thrice weekly flights to its Manila-Bangkok services, making it a 10 times weekly service last February.

“Cebu Pacific achieved an 87% load factor from January to March, an increase of four percentage points year-on-year. We attribute this to CEB’s trademark low fares, the increasing number of passengers who avail of our affordable seat sales months in advance, and our extensive route network,” she added.

Iyog said that the airline also introduced Lite Fares last March, further lowering fares for guests and expanding passengers’ options for their baggage allowances.

Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) will commence long-haul flights in the 3rd quarter of 2013.

The airline will lease up to 8 Airbus A330-300 aircraft to serve new markets beyond the range of CEB’s current fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

The Airbus A330 has a range of up to 11 hours which means CEB could serve markets such as Australia, Middle East, parts of Europe and the US.

The aircraft is one of the most commonly used wide-body aircraft in operation today, given its highly reliable operating statistics.

The A330-300 will give us the lowest cost per seat, allowing us to drive long-haul fares 35% lower than those currently offered by other airlines, and as much as 80% lower when CEB offers promo fares.

This aircraft type is very well suited to the kind of network we want to build and the routes we want to launch,” said Lance Gokongwei, CEB President and CEO.

“We are exploring serving cities where large Filipino communities reside --- Europe, Middle East, Oceania and the USA. Data indicates that more than half of Filipinos deployed in these regions take multiple stops and connecting flights because no home carrier can fly them there non-stop,” added Gokongwei.

Gokongwei cited Saudi Arabia as an example, where only 165,000 passengers flew direct non-stop flights from Manila (Civil Aeronautics Board 2010 data), compared to 293,000 Filipinos deployed to Saudi Arabia in the same year.

This means that nearly half of Filipinos who flew to Saudi Arabia in 2010 had to take multiple flights to get to their destination.

With CEB’s long haul operations, the budget airline will provide more affordable, direct flight options to Filipinos overseas, a population estimated to be 11 million worldwide
.

Since its inception in 1996, CEB has posted a good track record in stimulating short-haul travel of Filipinos working and residing overseas.

Passenger traffic to and from Hong Kong, where a lot of Filipinos reside and work, grew by 88% since CEB started operating flights from Manila in 2001.

“We want to do the same for long-haul traffic --- offer the lowest fares possible and drive a significant increase on demand for air travel to regions outside of Asia. This is truly an exciting time for CEB as we continue to be of service to the 11 million strong global Filipinos, wherever they are in the world; and to their families back home,” Gokongwei said.

“As CEB develops long-haul routes and opens new destinations for a Philippine flag carrier, we will be creating an important enabler for increased trade, tourism and foreign investment.”
