The Bristol Type 133 was a prototype single-seat, single-engine [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], armed with four guns, metal-skinned and with a retractable [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], built by The Bristol Aeroplane Co. to an [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] specification in the mid-1930s.

The single example crashed before the trials commenced.

Development

[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] called for a four-gun fighter with better high-altitude performance and endurance than current fighters, outstanding climb rate, manoeuvrability and all-round vision combined with a low landing speed.

Bristol's first contender, the private-venture biplane [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], had been a failure but when the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] let it be known that they would consider an engine other than the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], Bristol decided to try again with a very different design.

Once more, this was a private venture.


Powered by a [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] radial engine, the Type 133^{[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]} was a low-wing [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] monoplane and was the first RAF aircraft with retractable wheels.

It was also the first Bristol aircraft to use [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] construction for the wings, using recently invented [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] sheets.

The wings were of constant [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] out to rounded tips and of [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] or inverted [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] form, that is negative [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in the centre section and positive dihedral beyond.

The fabric-covered [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] extended over the whole of the outer wing and could be lowered symmetrically (drooped) in lieu of traditional [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].
The horizontal tail was of quite high aspect ratio and aluminium-covered, carrying horn-balanced, fabric-covered [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

The rear fuselage was an aluminium monocoque and the forward fuselage was aluminium-skinned over a tubular steel structure.

The pilot's open cockpit was situated over the wing at mid-chord.

The Mercury engine was enclosed in a long-chord cowling^{[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]}.

One advantage of the cranked wing was that it reduced the length of the undercarriage, making retraction easier.

The main wheels of the Type 133 retracted fully into bath-type fairings under the wings; this was done hydraulically, using a handpump.


Two of the four machine guns were fitted in the wing just outboard of the undercarriage fairing, the other two being either side of the nose.<sup>[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]

Testing over the next eight months produced some modifications including the addition of a sliding canopy and a crash pylon, better brakes, an enlarged rudder and the replacement of the tailskid with a castoring tail wheel.

Engine exhaust and cooling were also improved.

The long-span ailerons were shortened and combined with centre section split flaps.

The aircraft was almost ready to go the competitive tests at [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] when W.T. Campbell entered a spin with the undercarriage unintentionally down.

An irrecoverable flat spin developed and Campbell had to abandon the aircraft. That was the end of Bristol's interest in the specification F.7/30 competition, which was won by the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].^{[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]}
