Ethiopian Airlines reported last week a 165.3 percent increased in full year net profit to 1.3 billion birr
(US$118.6 million).
Operating revenue for the year to June spiked 32.8 percent to 12.2 billion birr whilst passenger numbers increased 12.3 percent to 2.8 million and cargo increased 38.4 percent compared to the prior year.
The carrier attributed its positive figures to an aggressive marketing campaign and major cost reductions.
"We introduced seven new routes which also contributed to our growth, including routes to Saudi Arabia and Nigeria” an airline spokeswoman told Reuters.
Chief Executive Girma Wake said in a news conference that the carrier had ordered five Boeing 777-200 long range planes and twelve 350-900s from EADS and eight Q400 turboprops from Bombardier.
Ethiopian has already paid down payments for all the aircraft on order which cost a total of $4.5 billion according to Wake. He added that that carrier planned to take out loans from European and the U.S. banks to pay for the balance.
In 2007/08 Ethiopian Airlines made a net profit of 507 million birr.

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) – Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa's leading carriers, has joined the Star Alliance -- a group of 28 international airlines -- to boost its reach, an official said Wednesday.
The move will offer greater integration in bookings and pooling of air miles for passengers.
"Ethiopian?s extensive intra-African network will provide more choice for our travellers and bring the Star Alliance benefits to new markets," Star Alliance's CEO, Jaan Albrecht, said in a statement.
The agreement comes eight months after the African carrier suffered its worst accident when one of its jets crashed off Lebanon's coast minutes after take-off, killing all 90 people on board.
Egyptair and South African Airways are already the network's members from Africa, which Star Alliance forecast to have the second highest growth rate in air traffic in the coming years.
