This summer generated more passengers for Malév.
The Hungarian national carrier is one of very few European network airlines that recorded success in its summer passenger traffic. During the summer months more customers travelled on the airline's European network than in the same period of 2008. This figure topped 12% in the month of August alone.

The summer season also worked out well from the aspect of the airline's capacity utilization, with an average load factor rising to 84% in August.
Parallel with the increase in passenger numbers the carrier's market share in Hungary also climbed, to 46.3% in August, an increase of 2,4% over last year.
At the same time the company registered significant growth (28% in August) in the number of its transit customers this summer, which shows that Malév wins back market share from competitive hubs in the region.

"I am happy that our new and more aggressive commercial approach leads to increased passenger numbers in both leisure and business customers segments. We will continue to increase our market share in Hungary and the region as well in the upcoming months." - valued the summer traffic results of Malév Karim Makhlouf Chief Commercial Officer.

Malév achieved its excellent turnover results due to the new commercial strategy unveiled at the airline this year. It introduced fares that were also competitive with those offered by budget airlines on the Hungarian and international markets. A regular advertising campaign targeted new passenger segments, from families to wellness and students. In addition, there is renewed commitment to corporate travellers with the introduction of the Corporate Saver
programme and constantly upgraded website, the latest development of which is the complete renewal of the booking system.

In the wake of the end of summer the focus turns to autumn and a new special offer from Malév with air tickets being marketed from HUF 19,000 (inc. taxes and charges) up until the end of September, for travel this year. The booking
system overhauled at the end of August also makes a considerable contribution to sales as the new system is even more transparent and simpler than its predecessor.

Thanks to the innovations the Malév website is now more accurately focused on sales. The new booking system minimizes the time spent making a reservation, for example, once the search has been completed users are immediately given a fixed total cost for their selected destination. A calendar-based search list has been developed which automatically also shows prices +-3 days from the given date.

Hungary's government is ready to buy a stake in national airline Malev or provide financing to ensure continued operation of the company, the Finance Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

The ministry said Hungarian Finance Minister Peter Oszko conducted talks in Moscow with Viktor Zubkov, Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister, about a resolution of Malev's situation.

"Hungary indicated that in order to ensure continued operation of the company it is ready to take an ownership or financing role in the national airline," the ministry said.

It said the Russian government welcomed the Hungarian stance and negotiations would continue.

Russia's state-owned Vneshekonombank holds 49 percent in AirBridge, the owner of Malev, while the rest of AirBridge shares are owned by Hungarian businesswoman Magdolna Kolto.

Loss-making Malev has been struggling with financing difficulties and has already received capital injections this year.

Hungary's Government has stepped in to rescue struggling flag-carrier Malev, retaking control of the airline three years after its privatisation.

The Government, via state holding company MNV, has agreed to acquire a 95% stake in Malev through a Ft25.2 billion ($127 million) investment funded partly by cash and partly by debt conversion.

Malev is in financial difficulty and the new agreement states that its equity situation and liquidity "need to be resolved".

It adds that the pact aims to ensure that steps needed for the "rescue and restructuring" of Malev are carried out in a "timely and efficient manner".

The finance ministry says that the acquisition will clear the way towards creating stability for the troubled airline.

But the ministry warns that "intensive" restructuring is required in order to minimise the burden on taxpayers and ensure that the rescue does not constitute illegal state aid.

Malev is to become profitable by 2012 at the latest, it says: "In order to achieve this, further tough measures can be expected in the operation of the company." These will include employee layoffs, network reorganisation and renegotiation of supplier contracts.

Malev was sold, in its entirety, to the private group AirBridge in 2007, in a bid to improve the flag-carrier's prospects.

But the subsequent poor economic climate obstructed Malev's development.

AirBridge's shareholders included Russian entrepreneur Boris Abramovich, whose airline operations - including KrasAir - subsequently collapsed, and his stake in AirBridge was transferred to financial firm Vnesheconombank.

Under the deal AirBridge retains a 5% share in Malev. Vnesheconombank is no longer a stakeholder but becomes a major creditor of the airline.

Vnesheconombank is to provide €32 million ($44 million) to MNV under a loan repayment guarantee, and Malev will replace loans obtained on unfavourable terms with lower-interest borrowing.

Malev chief executive Martin Gauss will remain in his position.

Wizz Air annonce qu'il va demander des explications à l'UE

A Malev Hungarian Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration HA-LOC performing flight MA-906 from Budapest (Hungary) to Heraklion (Greece) with 180 passengers and 7 crew, struck its tail onto the runway while landing in Heraklion at 15:47L (12:47Z) but managed to roll out safely, the aircraft taxied to the apron on its own power. The aircraft received substantial damage.

The return flight MA-907 supposed to carry 161 passengers had to be cancelled, the aircraft is still on the ground in Heraklion for repairs (standing Jun 26th 13:30Z). The passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

Hainan Airlines Group is considering investing in financially troubled Malev Hungarian Airlines, according to an industry insider in China who said the Haikou-based carrier is in negotiations with the state-owned airline. If successful, HNA would become the first Chinese carrier to invest in a European airline.
HNA signed a LOI with MA to deepen its cooperation and sent a group to negotiate with the Hungarian carrier. "HNA is in talks with Malev now mainly owing to the promotion [of cooperation between the carriers] by the Hungarian government and the Chinese government," said the source, who pointed out that it may take "at least four to five months" to clear all hurdles to complete a deal.
Interestingly, HNA Chairman Chen Feng noted last week that the carrier is more interested in setting up a new airline in Hungary. HNA considered making a bid for MA in 2004. Ultimately, the carrier decided against the investment because HNA lacked a broad route network in Europe and it considered the financial risk to great. Meanwhile, Chen revealed that HNA is interested in a stake in Germany's Hochtief Airport.

Hungarian state carrier Malev will be driven to bankruptcy if it is forced to repay nearly Ft100 billion ($440 million) in state aid, but the country's government insists that a national airline is justified and is working on a successor to maintain air links.

The European Commission is investigating the operator's compliance with state aid regulations, following the granting of substantial loans and support to the airline during 2007-10.

In a newly-published detailed white paper on Malev's catastrophic financial situation, Hungary's ministry of national development said it is searching for strategic investors to help Malev, or be prepared to assist with creating a new carrier if it fails.

"It is in the fundamental interest of the Hungarian economy to be accessible by air," said the ministry. "For lack of a national airline centred in Budapest, our economy would suffer an irreparable loss already in the medium term."

Negotiations have been held this year with "several" interested parties, it said, including China's Hainan - which subsequently backed out - and "significant" European aviation participants, which the ministry declined to identify.

The white paper is scathing about the poor management of Malev, pointing out that the airline has had around 20 general managers in the space of the last two decades, and that choices of leadership were frequently based on political loyalty rather than an ability to run the carrier.

"In the overwhelming majority of cases the appointed persons had no experience whatsoever in aviation business management," the ministry said.

Its paper highlights the "lack of a long-term plan" to deal with the carrier's financing and points out that several valuable assets - including its fuel-supply business, slots at London Heathrow, and hotel activities - were sold, depriving the company of "practically all of its wealth".

The ministry harshly criticises several "narrow-minded and prodigal" decisions over the course of the last 10 years, particularly centred on Malev's fleet strategy and its ill-fated and "irresponsible" privatisation.

"Although in the short run the contractual conditions [for the lease of aircraft] might have seemed to be advantageous, they impose heavy costs on the company up to this very date," it said.

It said expensive maintenance visits, which often fall simultaneously, combined with "disadvantageous" contractual conditions and "insufficient" reserves for servicing, have created a reserve deficit of $120 million.

Malev acquired a batch of Bombardier CRJ200s but the ministry said there was "no co-ordination" between this transaction and the leasing of the carrier's Boeing 737s, with the result that the fleet composition was "unsuitable".

Following privatisation, while under the ownership of Russian-backed AirBridge, Malev also acquired second-hand Bombardier Q400s to replace the CRJs and Fokker regional jets. But the CRJs had to be sold below cost price, said the ministry - one remains unsold - and the Fokkers underwent an expensive overhaul before return. It added that the technical condition of the Q400s was "uncertain" when purchased.

Malev's cancellation of long-haul flights was a "necessary" decision, but one that was nevertheless "rash and inconsiderate", the ministry said, not least because the last long-haul Boeing 767 is still waiting for sale, along with the CRJ.

The privatisation itself was "one blunder after another" by the then-government, the ministry claims, with failure to carry out necessary checks on investors and fix suitable conditions.

It claims the buyer practically did not invest any capital of its own, and that Malev effectively "purchased itself under a Russian umbrella". The ministry is damning about the course taken to privatise Malev, and the "drastic deterioration and destruction" of the company's business under private ownership, while the decision to renationalise the carrier - to avoid the "inconvenience" of liquidation - has placed a heavy burden on the country's budget. Le véritable problème est que personne n'est venu 'privatiser' avec les bonnes motivations. Tous les potentiels acquéreurs et / ou partenaires voulaient faire une opération de gain rapide à partir, et sur la base même de l'opération. Ils ont essayé de 'faire un coup', sans privilégier, dès le début, la réussite de la prise en main et le management de la Cie. dans ses opérations futures, .... soit dans la durée.

Aussi, il y avait trop de personnes au sein de la Cie., et du Gouvernement hongrois, qui voulaient elles-mêmes gagner rapidement de l'argent dans l'opération même de la privatisation, sans égard pour l'avenir. Et les Dirigeants sortants, ou ayant le risque & / ou la possibilité / probabilité de poursuivre leurs "jobs" dans le cadre de la Direction de l'Entreprise, cherchaient principalement à se positionner pour préparer leur Business Plan personnel respectif, y compris les indemnités qu'ils cherchaient à s'assurer au préalable, au cas où ils seraient licenciés ultérieurement.

Le travail pour lequel ils devaient gagner leur salaire était d'un intérêt secondaire !

Aussi, le Gouvernement hongrois était incapable de choisir les bons 'intermédiaires neutres et indépendants'. Il avait tendance à favoriser celui / ceux qui, d'une manière ou d'une autre, poursuivrai(en)t la solution de ToR ("Terms of Reference" / 'Termes de Référence') ayant les retombées les plus favorables pour 'le Gouvernement du jour', y compris et notamment certains individus au sein dudit Gouvernement / desdits Gouvernements , et des 'favoris" que chaque Gouvernement avait fait placer à des postes de responsabilité au sein de la Cie. MALEV !

Et certains Cies. aériennes parmi les 'acteurs / privatiseurs prétendants' cherchaient à user / abuser de l'influence de leur Gouvernements respectifs pour favoriser leur dossier de candidature respectif à la privatisation / 'reprivatisation après renationalisation', et, bien entendu, des 'arbitres' / 'évaluateurs' indépendants ('indépendants' ? ) qui seraient 'favorables' à leur candidature !

Tous pourris ! Quel magma !

Que personne ne s'étonne du spectacle auquel ils ont assisté ou participé ! Et les sottises successives de l'UE (la CE, Bruxelles, et les acteurs du bureau de représentation de l'UE à Budapest ), ... n'ont pas pu contribuer à une réussite !

Mais il est possible que les membres de l'actuel Gouvernement ne soient pour rien dans la situation actuelle, et qu'ils s'y trouvent impuissants.

State aid granted to struggling Hungarian flag carrier Malev was today branded illegal by the European Commission, which has ordered Hungary to recover nearly Ft100 billion ($406 million) from the airline.

The EC opened an in-depth investigation into Malev in December 2010 and today concluded that financing granted to the carrier between 2007 and 2010 did not comply with European Union state aid rules because Malev, "given its consistently difficult financial situation, would have been unable to secure such financing on the market on the terms conceded by Hungary, nor possibly any financing at all".

Vrai, ... mais ! Quand on réfléchit au sauvetage d'AF, il y a quelques années, ... ou à ALSTHOM... ?

It added that Malev had failed to demonstrate how it could become viable again under its current business model, which "contained no evidence that a private source would be contributing to the cost of restructuring".

In addition, the business plan "contained no compensatory measures to minimise the competition distortions brought about by the significant state support", noted the EC.

Tout cela est vrai, .... mais.

The funds that will now have to be recovered from Malev by the Hungarian government include a €76 million ($97 million) loan which was taken over in 2007, a tax and social debt deferral amounting to Ft13.8 billion and two capital increases of Ft25.4 billion in February 2010 and Ft5.7 billion in September 2010.

Hungary's government last month rejected suggestions that Malev was close to bankruptcy, noting that the ministry of national development was conducting "advanced negotiations with several financially-stable strategic investors".

However, this was before the airline was ordered to pay back the unlawful state aid.

Le problème est que l'UE ne se pose jamais la question 'clé' sur sa propre responsabilité dans ses situations ; ou sur celle des autres "restructuring partners", que l'UE a 'agréés' 'en cours de route.

Malev chairman Janos Berenyi today said the EC ruling would have no impact on the day-to-day running of the airline because the carrier did not face an immediate payment liability.

"The Hungarian government has informed Malev management and the general public that it remains committed to maintaining the national carrier. Accordingly, Malev management and all staff members are carrying out their work as usual, and they are working on sustaining into 2012 the improvements in results recorded in the past few months," said Berenyi.

He added that Malev expects "significantly improved operational results in 2012".

Hungary's Malev Runs Out Of Cash

Hungarian airline Malev said it doesn't have the financing to keep going, hours after the government took preparatory steps to restructure the loss-making carrier and protect it from bankruptcy proceedings.

The announcement follows a European Commission ruling early this month that forced the carrier to repay state aid worth hundreds of millions of dollars received from 2007-10, the equivalent of its entire 2010 revenue.

"At today's board meeting, chief executive Lorant Limburger informed the board that, despite the continuous improvement in commercial results, the financing of operations has become unsustainable as of the end of January, and it is unresolved," Malev said on Monday.

The decree also allows a government body to run any liquidation procedure started against Malev and handle its assets.

In a January 9 ruling, the EU Commission listed various forms of state financing for Malev between 2007 and 2010, which it said Malev would not have been able to obtain from the market on the terms granted by the Hungarian authorities.

The airline posted a loss of HUF24.6 billion Hungarian forints (USD$110 million) in 2010, but early this month forecast a significant improvement in operating results this year on the back of higher revenue and by filling more seats on its planes.

Feb 3 (Reuters) - Hungarian flag-carrier Malev announced on Friday that it had stopped operating because its liquidity situation has become unsustainable and all its flights had been grounded as of 0500 GMT on Friday.

The airline had been placed under extraordinary protection from creditors and a receiver was appointed earlier this week.

Malev said its suppliers had lost confidence in the airline and started to demand payment, while the government could no longer provide cash injections for the company.

"This has accelerated the outflow of cash to such an extent, that by today the situation of the airline has become unsustainable," Malev's board said in a statement.

Hungarian airline Malev has suspended operations and grounded its fleet in the face of accelerating financial collapse.

A statement on the Oneworld alliance member's website said that it taken the decision to "cease operations" from 06.00 local on 3 February "after 66 years of almost continuous operation".

Lorant Limburger, chief executive, said it had "worked hard" to avoid the airline's closure, however, recent revelations about its financial health had worsened the situation, with suppliers demanding up-front payment for services.

"This cash outflow accelerated to such an extent that the airline is now in an untenable situation," he said.

The Hungarian government is unable to offer further support thanks to EC rules on state aid. The commission on 9 January ruled that Malev would have to pay back the nearly Ft100 billion ($406 million) it received from Budapest between 2007 and 2010.

"Against this background, the board decided to order [Malev] to end its proper functioning," said Limburger.

Hungarian flag-carrier Malev ceased operating early on Friday morning after 66 years of almost continuous service, after its planes were held overseas for unpaid debts.

Hungary's national airline had been placed under extraordinary protection from creditors and a receiver was appointed by the government earlier this week.

Malev said its suppliers had lost confidence and started to demand advance payment for their services, while the government could no longer provide cash injections for the company following a European Union ruling last month.

"This has accelerated the outflow of cash to such an extent, that by today the situation of the airline has become unsustainable," Malev said in a statement.

"The board, in order to minimise losses, has ordered a halt in operation of the Hungarian national airline."

All flights were grounded from 0500 GMT, Friday.

The stoppage comes after the airline was ordered by the European Commission last month to repay millions of dollars worth of state aid received between 2007 and 2010.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Kossuth radio on Friday that the decision to ground Malev was made after two aircraft were not allowed to take off from Tel Aviv and Ireland due to Malev's debts.

Orban said despite the stoppage he believed the country needed a national airline if it could find investors willing to invest in it.

"It is painful... We tried to keep Malev operational as long as possible, but we could no longer do it as we would have lost our aircrafts seized abroad... We had to stop," Orban told Kossuth radio.

EU competition regulators opened an in-depth investigation into Malev in December 2010.

Oui. Il est permis de s'interroger de l'utilité et de la futilité de la position de l'UE / la CE ! Elle n'a toujours pas compris que :

• il ne suffisait / ne suffit pas de taper sur les "legacy carriers", afin de faciliter l'entrée ou la préservation des 'petites' compagnies sur le marché du transport aérien,
  
• pour, ensuite les accabler avec les obligations adaptées, certes, aux "mature carriers", mais pas du tout aux "new intrants" !
  

Le dossier MALEV est une illustration, depuis 1991 (peut-être même 1990), de tout ce qu'il ne faut pas faire dans la privatisation d'une Compagnie aérienne nationale d'un pays de 10 millions d'habitants (environ), sortant de la nuit noire du système communiste pour être ébloui, simultanément, par tout ce qu'il y a de merveilleux et de plus sot et ridicule du système du marché libéral. Et tout ça, sans les mesures d'accompagnement adaptées et appropriées.

Et, bien qu'on n'aime pas (vraiment pas ! ) donner dans le jeu de blâme, il est indéniable , hélas, que le grand fautif là-dedans, est la Commission européenne, qui, bien entendu, s'endéfendra énérgiquement !

Mais les faits -- les faits, ..... pléthoriques, d'ailleurs -- donnent le démenti aux avis de la CE, qui n'a jamais vu, ou anticipé, les effets pervers de ses aides, et largesses, distribuées sans discernement aux contextes divers et variés qu'on a reconcontrés, 'sur le tas', dans le sillage de la chute du Communisme. Nous y étions. Nous y avons travaillé dur. Et nous avons vu des inepties qui dépassent les imaginations normales !

Et, à ce sujet, sur tous les aspects principaux, et fondamentaux, nous somme nombreux à pouvoir en débattre et à en découdre (avec la courtoisie d'usage) avec n'importe quel acteur de la CE, ou de l'UE !

The airline posted a loss of HUF24.6 billion Hungarian forints (USD$110 million) in 2010, but early this month forecast a significant improvement in operating results this year on the back of higher revenue and by filling more seats on its planes.

Ryanair To Launch 26 Routes From Budapest

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair announced 26 new routes from Budapest on Friday in a move to take advantage of the grounding of Hungarian airline Malev over unpaid debts.

Ryanair ! Opportuniste, certes ! Mais rapide, réaliste et raisonnable, ... non ? Rapace ? Sans doute ! Mais il ne sera pas seul !

Hungarian flag-carrier Malev ceased operating early on Friday, ending 66 years of almost continuous service, after some of its planes were held overseas for unpaid debts.

Ryanair, which in January announced plans to fly five routes from Budapest, has increased that to 31, most of which will be operating by April, the company said in a statement.

It said it would base four aircraft at Budapest and carry up to 2 million passengers per year.

After Hungarian flag-carrier Malev ceased operating on Friday, several budget carriers, including Ryanair and Air Berlin, announced an immediate increase in their flights from Budapest airport.

Normal. Inévitable. Bien sûr, .... Ryanair n'est pas seul ! Il n'est pas le seul rapace !

Ryanair, which in January announced plans to fly five routes from Budapest, has increased that to 31, most of which will be operating by April. It said it will base four aircraft in Budapest and carry up to 2 million passengers per year.

Budapest-based low-cost airline Wizz Air offered to sell 50,000 tickets for HUF9,900 forints (USD$45) to holders of Malev tickets for flights in the winter season, which will end on March 24, Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi told a news conference.

Wizz Air, Central Europe's biggest carrier will raise its Budapest-based fleet to five planes from three.

Lufthansa said it would add one daily flight from Hamburg and Berlin each to Budapest from Monday. Air Berlin, Germany's second-biggest airline, is also adding a flight from Berlin to Budapest.

Czech Travel Service's low-cost airline SmartWings will start flights this month from Budapest to Tel Aviv, followed by Paris in April and several other European destinations in May.

SIXTY-SIX YEARS OF HISTORY

Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Kossuth radio on Friday that the decision to ground Malev, which ends 66 years of almost continuous service, was made after two aircraft were not allowed to take off from Tel Aviv and Ireland.

Malev said its suppliers had lost confidence and started to demand advance payment for their services, while the government could no longer inject cash following a European Union ruling to claw back millions of dollars of state aid last month.

The airline, which is 95-percent owned by the state after failed privatisation attempts, has a leased fleet of 22 passenger aircraft and employs around 2,600 people. It was placed under creditor protection earlier in the week.

All flights were grounded from 0500 GMT on Friday. Malev's early morning announcement was greeted with scornful cheers and applause by passengers.

"They gave us a bottle of water, and they think this will compensate us for the whole ticket?" said 30-year-old Melinda Kis, who was en route to Copenhagen with her husband and four children.

Malheureusement, en ces moments-là, on ne voit pas beaucoup d'élégance !

COMPENSATION UNCLEAR

In December, the government warned the potential loss of the airline, which spent about EUR€50 million a year on air service charges and real estate fees, could jeopardise the operation of Budapest airport, owned by Germany's Hochtief and four financial partners.

Airport spokesman Mihaly Hardy said: "There are some estimates that over 20 or 23 routes of Malev will never be served by other airlines."

C'est, sans doute, l'aspect "public service" qui trinque.

Pal Volner, state secretary of the Development Ministry said an increase in low-cost airline traffic may help offset the loss of volume due to Malev's failure.

"Should the airport nevertheless face a problem, that will have to be settled in separate negotiations," Volner said.

It was not immediately clear whether Malev's halt would automatically trigger a compensation clause in the sale agreement the airport signed in 2005 with BAA, which sold it two years later to its current owners.

The Development Ministry said in December the state could be required to pay about EUR€1.5 billion (USD$2 billion) if the airline ceased flying, with "grave consequences for the maintenance of the budget deficit target".

Ma remarque ne fut point "politique" ! Il ne s'agit pas d'un avis ! Et, même s'il l'est, .. il est rare, et bien enraciné dans les faits !

Le fait est, ... la réalité est .... qu'il est absolument absurde que la Hongrie (et je connais assez bien et aime beaucoup ce pays) signe le "Fiscal Compact", quand des événements imminents, et inéluctables, tels que l'affaire Malev et les exigences de la CE / de l'UE, allaient, immédiatement, mettre la Hongrie dans l'impossibilité d'honorer sa signature ! Et nous pouvons attendre la même chose à l'égard, par exemple, du Portugal, de l'Irlande, de la Grèce (bien sûr) et de l'Espagne (qui a déjà demandé à l'UE un traitement de faveur), ... sans oublier, tout de même, la précarité de 'Italie (et il y a surement d'autres pays qu'on pourrait mentionner).

Et ces fragilités seront réfléchies dans de nombreuses compagnies aériennes de l'UE !

"(But) I think restarting is not impossible, and if we can get rid of the burdens inherited from the past, there could still be a Hungarian national airline," he said.
