Estonian Air agrees in principle on Bombardier acquisition

Estonian Air has agreed in principle to acquire three Bombardier aircraft and is to disclose further details next week.
The airline has long been a candidate to take the type and was initially listed as a recipient of Bombardier CRJ900s when shareholder SAS Group sealed a fleet-renewal pact with Bombardier in early 2008.
But although at least one CRJ900 was subsequently painted in Estonian Air colours, the airline is still operating only Boeing 737 and Saab 340 aircraft.
SAS Group has since backed away from its involvement with the airline, as part of its own corporate restructuring.
But a spokeswoman for Estonian Air indicates that there is movement on the fleet-renewal front.
She says that the carrier has "agreed on basic conditions" for an acquisition of three aircraft but stresses that the contract has not been firmed.
"We are going to sign soon," she says, adding that the carrier plans to release further details on 13 September

Estonian Air has firmed a contract to acquire three Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen aircraft, a deal which replaces an earlier fleet-renewal agreement with the airframer.

Under the new agreement Estonian Air will take delivery of the jets in early 2011 and 2012.

The airline had been included in a Bombardier fleet-renewal agreement for SAS Group in early 2008, under which it was to receive a number of CRJs.

But the Tallinn-based carrier says the new contract "replaces" this earlier deal which was originally forged while SAS Group was still committed to Estonian Air as an affiliate airline.

SAS Group is reducing its shareholding in Estonian Air, as part of an effort to divest non-core activity, while the Estonian Government is intending to increase its stake to 90%.

Estonian Air says the CRJ pact will enter effect once the country's Parliament has approved a Government decision to increase the carrier's share capital.

"Long-term loans of various financial institutions, and internal funds, are used for the aircraft purchasing," adds the carrier.

Chief executive Andrus Aljas says the aircraft will be delivered ahead of its peak traffic period.

"This is a fundamental step for our company," he says. "We are upgrading our fleet with smaller aircraft that better meet Estonia's market demands and enable us to improve our flight schedule as well as open new destinations."

Estonian Air says it will use the aircraft mainly on high-demand business destinations, and adds that the aircraft agreement includes a comprehensive support package.

Au 31 juillet 2010, 1 597 de ces avions de la série CRJ, dont 234 biréacteurs CRJ900 et CRJ900 NextGen avaient été livrés à des clients du monde entier. Des avions de la série CRJ sont en service auprès de plus de 60 sociétés aériennes et ont enregistré plus de 28 millions d’heures de vol et plus de 23 millions de cycles de décollage-atterrissage. De plus, des variantes d’entreprise d’avions de la série CRJ sont en service auprès de plus de 30 exploitants.

It says it is assessing the options for a new aircraft type and "taking steps" to implement it into its network.

"The change is related to the strategic goal of Estonian Air to offer its customers faster and more frequent air links between Estonia and various European cities," says the carrier.

Estonian Air has two Saab 340s but says, from April, it will operate with a single aircraft as it proceeds with the withdrawal.

This means it will also axe its services from the capital Tallinn to the cities of Minsk and Vilnius.

The carrier says this reduction of its network, from the beginning of the summer season, is "in order to have the transition to the new aircraft type more smooth and cost-effective".

Estonian has not indicated which turboprops it is considering introducing in place of the Saabs.
