Le serbe JAT cloue ses avions au sol après l'arrêt de la maintenance : ardoise !
D'Airwise ( Reuters )
Serbian flag carrier JAT grounded its fleet on Wednesday after maintenance staff refused to work on its aircraft because of the airline's overdue debts, a spokeswoman said.
"We stopped our flights as of this morning due to a strike of JAT Tehnika mechanics who sign off on planes before they take off," said Mirjana Dragovic.
"We are negotiating and expect to find a solution late in the afternoon," the spokeswoman said. "Our debt to JAT Tehnika is USD$1.5 million and we never disputed that. We are a month behind in paying it."
Once part of state flag carrier JAT, JAT Tehnika employs more than 900 people and reported a profit of over EUR30,000 euros in 2007 after which it was advertised, unsuccessfully, for sale.
Government attempts to sell both JAT Tehnika and JAT airline have failed due to lack of interest.
Dragovic said JAT had asked the government to approve a new business plan that would allow it to have its own maintenance unit. "In the past week we have seen it was vital for JAT to run its own maintenance unit and we expect the government to approve that plan in the coming weeks."
Once Yugoslavia's national airline with a home market of more than 20 million people, JAT was hard hit by sanctions imposed on Serbia for its role in the 1990s wars.
It last bought new planes in the early 1990s and its entire fleet was grounded internationally for most of that decade.
The company now has EUR209 million (USD$304.5 million) of debt but its assets, a fleet of mainly Boeing 737 planes plus real estate, are estimated by analysts to be worth USD$150 million.
After Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa entered the Balkan market, JAT saw its market share slip to 45 percent of all traffic through the capital Belgrade last year from around 60 percent in 2002.
