Le développement de l'Avro 685 York débuta en 1941 sous la désignation « Type 685 » sous la direction de Roy Chadwick.

During its first major overhaul by Avro at Manchester (Ringway) in 1945, the aircraft was re-painted a light duck egg green, a shade intended to cool down the aeroplane, instead of its former normal camouflage colour scheme.
