With more than 180 flight hours logged to date, the PiperJet is set to fly to Wisconsin later this month for its first
appearance at EAA's annual AirVenture.

During the July 27- Aug. 2 gathering, Piper Aircraft plans to reveal its growth strategy, with a particular focus on Asia. The Vero Beach, Fla., manufacturer was acquired two months ago by Imprimis, a corporate finance and investment
management company with offices in Singapore, Bangkok and Brunei. Imprimis said at the time that it was drawn to Piper because of its expansion potential in the Asia Pacific market in part because of the demand for pilot training there.

The new owner also said it was committed to the development of the PiperJet, the 72-year-old OEM's first jet. Powered by a single Williams FJ44-3AP turbofan derated to 2,400 lb thrust, the PiperJet features a Garmin digital flight deck and seating for six.

Now in flight test, the aircraft has completed 120 flights totaling 181 hours and is exploring the high altitude regimes. Gear doors are installed, the pressurization system is operating and, spokesman Mark Miller said yesterday, "We're confident we'll maker our 360 knots."

The aircraft is scheduled to make demonstration flights during the Oshkosh gathering, the first time the aircraft will perform before such a crowd.

The company says it has orders for 204 PiperJets. The aircraft is priced at $2.199 million (in 2006 dollars) and deliveries are expected to begin in 2011.

Despite the recession,there has been no slowdown in progress on the PiperJet, according to Piper Aircraft CEO Kevin Gould.

In remarks made at the annual Sun ‘n’ Fun Fly-In April 13, Gould says the proof-of-concept aircraft has logged 340 hours of data gathering during 240 flights that have explored both high-speed and low-speed flight regimes. The company is hiring 60 to 70 additional engineers as the project moves into the next phase.

Detailed design is underway, to be followed by assembly of a conformal aircraft, which will mark the time when actual certification flight testing can get underway.
The company hopes to have a conformal model ready before the end of the year.

The preliminary design review is complete, and the aircraft is currently on schedule and meeting its weight and cost targets, with first deliveries scheduled for 2013.

Piper still has 200 standing orders for the single-engine, $2.199 million personal jet, with very few cancellations during the economic downturn, Gould says.

Piper Aircraft yesterday announced that it selected DeCrane Aerospace and Propel Designs as interior specialists for the PiperJet.

Both outfitting companies will integrate passenger cabin interior improvements that have been verified by Piper’s single-engine proof-of-concept jet, as well as through dialog with current and prospective PiperJet customers.

“We are pleased to be partnering with DeCrane Aerospace and Propel Designs as the PiperJet program continues to gain momentum,” said Piper president and CEO Kevin Gould.

“DeCrane and Propel add to the exceptional talent pool we have assembled to solidify our interior design improvements.

According to Piper executive vice president Randy Groom, who joined the company last month, “Numerous meetings and conversations with PiperJet buyers have reaffirmed many of our design parameters for the interior and even led
us to make some additional improvements.

In addition, test flights being flown by the PiperJet proof-of-concept vehicle have verified our expectations and helped us decide on further enhancements.

Piper plans to reveal what the specific PiperJet aircraft interior improvements are during the NBAA Convention in October.
