Brazil's TAM is looking at acquiring 20 aircraft in the 100 to 150-seat category as part of a new plan to significantly expand the operation of recently acquired regional carrier Pantanal.

TAM CEO Libano Barroso reveals the carrier is now working on a new fleet and network plan for Pantanal, which envisions 20 jets within three years. He says TAM has begun discussing this requirement with potential suppliers but has not yet concluded which type of aircraft is the best fit for Pantanal's network.

"We are studying the gauge, the size, between 100 seats to 150 seats. We are studying the trade-offs to see what the best aircraft is to fulfil this new network," Barroso told investors during a 31 March conference call to discuss TAM's fourth quarter earnings.

Pantanal, which was acquired by TAM in December 2009, currently operates five ATR 42 turboprops on short-haul routes from its base at Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport.
These five aircraft have been incorporated into TAM's newly revised five-year fleet plan, but the carrier plans to phase out the five ATR 42s in 2012.

Barroso says TAM plans to use Pantanal to operate routes to "medium density cities". This includes continuing to serve some of the regional destinations in Pantanal's current network as well as new destinations.

"In three years we feel we'll be able to have 20 aircraft dedicated to these mid density routes," Barroso explains.

He adds these 20 aircraft will be added to TAM's current five-year fleet plan, which already includes 27 additional narrowbody aircraft as TAM grows its [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] family fleet from 107 at the end of 2009 to 134 aircraft at the end of 2014.

Barroso says TAM, which previously operated [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] 100s but currently does not operate any aircraft smaller than A319s, will focus on trunk routes while Pantanal will be used to operate thinner routes.

He says these routes are particularly important to TAM's growth going forward as they will result in improved domestic and international connections for Brazil's regional cities. He points out TAM in May will join Star Alliance, giving these regional cities connections to even more international destinations.

Barroso did not specify which types of aircraft specifically TAM is looking at for Pantanal.

But the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] E-190/195 and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]/[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] are the most logical candidates given the former is produced in Brazil and TAM already operates A319s.

The new [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] CSeries is probably not an option because it will not be available until late 2013.

"We are negotiating with the providers to see what the best solution is for us," Barroso says, adding TAM is still studying and designing the Pantanal network.

He says while the Pantanal acquisition is small, it was "of great strategic value because with that we are expanding our operation". He adds: "Furthermore we are strengthening our strategic position at Congonhas airport, the most important in the country."

With Pantanal, TAM has regained the leadership position at Congonhas with 48% of the slots at the downtown airport. Gol, which now has 46% of Congonhas' slots, became the largest carrier at Congonhas after acquiring [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 2007.

Pantanal was struggling as an independent regional carrier and in bankruptcy protection when acquired by TAM for R$13 million ($7 million) in an auction. Pantanal only generated R$52 million in revenues in 2009, down from R$72 million in 2006.

Over the past years, the airline has expanded its intercontinental network to cover a variety of destinations in the USA and Europe, many of these being Star Alliance hubs.

All in all, the Star Alliance network now counts 27 member carriers, offering more than 21,050 daily flights to 1,167 destinations in 181 countries.

“With TAM Airlines we gain a carrier based in South America, an important aviation market and home to many growing economies.

Combining TAM Airlines’ network with that of our existing member carriers will allow Star Alliance to offer a very competitive product to, from and within this region,” said Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance.

Brazil's TAM seen ordering 25 Airbus planes
BERLIN June 8 (Reuters) - TAM, Brazil's largest air carrier, is poised to order Airbus aircraft worth just under $3 billion at the Berlin air show on Tuesday, a source famliar with the deal told Reuters.

The order will include 20 A320 single-aisle planes and five A350 wide-body jets, the source said, asking not to be identified because had not yet been announced.
Such an order would be worth around $2.8 billion at list prices.
A second source said earlier the EADS ([Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]) planemaking subsidiary would announce orders for A350s and A320s after bagging an $11 billion deal for A380 superjumbos from Emirates in a surprise opening to Europe's second largest air show.
Airbus declined to comment ahead of a second news conference called for 1400 GMT.

TAM yesterday signed an MOU with Airbus at the Berlin Air Show for 20 new A320 family aircraft and five additional A350-900s.

If finalized, the deal would bring TAM's total number of A320 family aircraft on order for future delivery to 64 and its A350 orders to 27. It also has three A330-200s on order (Sevrien : à moteurs RR Trent 772B -EP, me semble-t-il).

The five A350-900s will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. TAM did not select an engine for the 20 A320s....

Airbus noted that the last five years have marked its "most successful period in Latin America with 325 aircraft sold and a record backlog of more than 230 aircraft orders to be delivered to its Latin American customers. Today, more than 370 Airbus aircraft are flying with 23 Latin American airlines, representing more than 40% of the fleet in service.

TAM and SWISS, both airlines Star Alliance members, will start on June 28 codeshare on two flights
operated by SWISS: Paris - Zurich and Zürich - Paris.

Thus, companies extend codeshare agreement started in May 2009, offering more convenience and benefits to customers.

TAM Linhas Aereas has selected Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines to power two new A330 aircraft in a
deal valued at more than $100m.

The contract includes installed and spare engines for two firm A330-200 aircraft and a 12-year service agreement provided by Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners.

"Experience with our existing Pratt & Whitney fleet of engines made the selection of these aircraft simple," said Líbano Barroso, president and CEO, TAM Linhas Aereas.

TAM Airlines, Airbus’ biggest customer in the Southern Hemisphere and Brazil’s largest airline, signed a firm order for 25 eco-efficient Airbus aircraft, bringing the Brazilian airline’s total Airbus order book to 176.

This order for 20 A320 Family and five A350-900s follows the Memorandum of Understanding announced at ILA Berlin Air Show in June.

TAM’s new A320 Family aircraft will replace existing A320 Family aircraft as part of the airline’s commitment to keep an average fleet age of six years.

Both the A320 Family and A350 XWB fleet will serve the carrier’s existing routes and boost eco-efficiency.

“We have the commitment to offer our customers one of the youngest fleets in the world of aviation,” said Líbano Barroso, CEO of TAM Airlines.

As of today, TAM's total Airbus orders have increased to 134 A320 Family aircraft, 15 A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB. 65 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, two A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB are still in the backlog.

LAN, TAM Merger To Be Completed Nine Months

The boards of directors at Chile’s LAN Airlines and Brazilian operator TAM have backed a binding agreement that, if approved by shareholders and regulators, will create one of the world’s largest carriers as early as August.
Under the plan unveiled Jan. 19, LAN Airlines eventually will assume a controlling role within the new holding company, as well as the new name Latam Airlines, while TAM eventually will be folded into the new company structure. Latam Airlines also will assume LAN’s current listings on stock exchanges in Chile and the U.S. as well as TAM’s on Brazil’s BM&F Bovespa exchange; TAM’s U.S. listing will disappear.
TAM, however, will remain a separate operating brand, as will LAN’s current branded operations.
“We are pleased to announce that LAN and TAM are taking a new and very important step towards building one of the leading airline groups in the world,” says Enrique Cueto, CEO of LAN Airlines and proposed CEO for Latam. “Today’s announcement confirms the commitment that we share with our friends at TAM, which is a strong passion and determination to provide millions of Latin American passengers with better service, always certain of the great potential of the Latin American market.”
Marco Antonio Bologna, who will retain his role as TAM’s CEO, adds, “As regional leaders, TAM and LAN make a natural move in the global trend of consolidation in the airline sector. We believe this is the best way to guarantee our companies’ growth, in a scenario of high competition and growing demand. We are confident that, after all the required approvals, we will be able to offer even more advantages to our customers, employees and stockholders.”
Apart from shareholder approval, LAN and TAM must also meet Brazilian ownership laws, but this is now expected to be a formality, as are regulatory endorsements from Chile and the U.S. According to the two airlines, the merger should now take between six to nine months, and will create one of the world’s 10 largest airlines.
“Latam will provide transport services for passengers and cargo to more than 115 destinations in 23 countries, operating a fleet of more than 280 aircrafts and will have over 40,000 employees,” the carriers note.

The operator becomes only the third airline to commit to a deal for the twinjet, after India's IndiGo and the US-based [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

"Ordering more A320s allows TAM to reduce costs and further improve our environmental performance."
Neither TAM nor Airbus has given a delivery date for the aircraft. The A320neo is intended to be available from 2016.

TAM signs MOU for 32 Airbus A320s, orders two Boeing 777s

Brazil’s TAM Linhas Aereas has signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 32 Airbus A320s, including 22 re-engined [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], and ordered two Boeing 777s, the airline and plane makers announced Monday.

The memorandum of understanding makes TAM the A320neo launch customer in Latin America. Virgin America was [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].
TAM has not yet decided between the A320neo’s two engine choices: the CFM International LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1100G.
“Our order for industry leading fuel efficient aircraft opens a world of possibilities for TAM, thanks to its substantially increased range capability,” TAM Airlines Chief Executive Officer Líbano Barroso said in a news release. “Ordering more A320s allows TAM to reduce costs and further improve our environmental performance.”
TAM’s order for two additional Boeing 777-300ERs is worth approximately $568 million at list prices, although airlines generally get substantial discounts. TAM, which also added purchase rights for two more 777s, now has ordered 12 of the wide-body aircraft.
“These additional airplanes will help us expand our long-haul service capability to meet the growing market demand in Brazil and beyond,” TAM Holdings Chief Executive Officer Marco Antonio Bologna said in a news release.
