A three-ship of F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 421st Fighter Squadron, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, fly alongside a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 964th Airborne Air Control Squadron Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., during Red Flag 12-4 July 20, 2012, over the Nevada Test and Training Range.

The 421 FS prepares to deploy worldwide to conduct Day/Night air superiority and precision strike sorties employing laser-guided and inertially aided munitions during contingencies and combat.

A U.S. Air Force E-3 Sentry from the 965th Airborne Air Control Squadron approaches a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 964th Airborne Air Control Squadron, both assigned to Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., to refuel during Red Flag 12-4 July 20, 2012, over the Nevada Test and Training Range.

The Sentry provides all-weather surveillance, command, control and communications during the exercise.

A dust devil whirls through the flight line just before the afternoon launch during Red Flag 12-4 July 23, 2012, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

The dust devil came when a thunderstorm moved across the Las Vegas valley and put the afternoon launch on a weather hold.

Red Flag exercises have been held at the Nevada Test and Training Range since 1975 as an opportunity for U.S. flyers to train in realistic combat simulations alongside their counterparts from allied nations.

The last of four Kfir's jettison its drag chute after returning from a mission during Red Flag 12-4 July 18, 2012, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. After the last aircraft lands, ground crew members gather the chutes and bring them back to the hangar for repacking.
