Germany’s second-largest airline plans to make a decision in the next few months. The decision will be based not only on the program status, but also on its own long-haul strategy. The airline operates a total of 13 Airbus A330s that it originally planned to replace with 787s when it ordered the type in 2007. But it has since drastically scaled down its long-haul services after its strategy to revert to a more business traveler-oriented model failed and it was forced to close down new China routes.
Also, Air Berlin finds itself in the middle of a dispute over future pay with pilots at its subsidiary LTU, which operates the long-haul services.
Air Berlin officials say that given the 787 program delays, the airline can easily cancel the order, which was announced on the eve of the 787 roll-out on July 7, 2007. One alternative option considered is to sell the delivery slots to another operator once demand for the type resurges and economic conditions improve.
The airline is meanwhile looking at further cuts to its long-haul network and may also reduce capacity on domestic routes to continue its revised strategy of targeting higher yields, rather than volumes.
In the second quarter, revenues were down 3.8% at €836 million, but the company managed to improve its operating profit by 33%, reaching €17.6 million. CEO Joachim Hunold said he still aims at a higher operating profit for fiscal 2009, compared to last year.
Separately, the airline called off the planned sale of its freight subsidiary, Leisure Cargo. Offers for the unit came in too low, and the company now is waiting for market conditions to improve. Nonetheless, Air Berlin is looking at selling more of its Boeing 737NGs to Asia as part of its push to control capacity.

Air Berlin posted a €95.2 million ($142.4 million) profit in the third quarter, more than double the €45.1 million reported in the year-ago period, thanks in part to reduced foreign exchange losses and €20 million in proceeds from payments on a convertible bond.
Revenue fell 8.2% year-over-year to €974 million "due to planned capacity reductions," AB said yesterday, but operating profit rose 33.5% to €118 million from €88.4 million in the 2008 third quarter.
"Despite the remaining risks with respect to the economic environment and the development of the economy, Air Berlin confirms its previous forecast that it will achieve a better operating result than in 2008," it said. EBIT was €14.2 million last year. Full third-quarter results are scheduled to be released Thursday.
In October, AB's unit revenue dropped 1% year-over-year to €6.13 cents. It transported 2.7 million passengers during the month, down 0.9%, against a 1.2% cut in capacity. Load factor rose 0.2 point to 80.2%.

Air Berlin said it is seeking to recruit 700 flight attendants and 120 pilots. The new employees would be based in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Munster/Osnabruck, Nuremberg, Paderborn-Lippstadt and Stuttgart in Germany as well as Basel/Muhlhausen and Zurich in Switzerland, AB said. It currently operates 129 aircraft. It has retired all of its 737 Classics and plans to ground two 757s and one 767-300ER by the end of January. It is expecting to take delivery of 26 aircraft in 2010.

In January 2010, Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline company, in-creased its revenue per available seat kilometer (ASK) to 5.24 Eurocents, i.e. an increase of 5.6 percent over the corresponding month of the previous year (January 2009: 4.96 Eurocents).

Fleet capacity utilization decreased slightly to 69.1 percent, i.e. by 0.3 percentage points (2009: 69.4 percent).


Capacity in January 2010 was reduced by 0.7 percent in comparison with the corresponding month of the previous year.

The number of passengers transported decreased from 1,903,330 to 1,880,669 passengers
(including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes), i.e. a decrease of 1.2 percent.

Niki President Niki Lauda told ATWOnline in Vienna that he will remain in charge of the LCC following Air Berlin's move to increase its share to 49.9% and that the airlines will work together to create efficiencies that will allow them to compete with heavyweights Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]. Together the carriers hold more than a 20% market share in Vienna, and they have an agreement with the airport for exclusive use of the Pier West terminal once the new Skylink terminal is operational in 2012.

In the meantime, Niki and AB will increase frequencies between VIE, Berlin and Dusseldorf while some AB flights from other Austrian airports could be absorbed by Niki. Lauda denied rumors that Niki will launch a long-haul operation. "We will do what we do best and stay with it," he said. It plans to increase its fleet of 11 aircraft to 27 by 2014, comprising 20 A320 family planes and seven E-190s. He expects 2010 revenue of €380 million and 3.5 million passengers, "with a clear positive profit." The number of employees will grow this year to 600 from 520.

Pilots at Air Berlin, Germany's second-biggest airline after Lufthansa, have called off a warning strike to hold wage talks with the company, averting possible travel chaos for passengers.

"Due to an improved offer by Air Berlin, (trade union) Vereinigung Cockpit sees a chance of coming to an agreement in this wage dispute by way of negotiations," the union said on Thursday.

Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) had called for a three-hour warning strike earlier this week to fight for better working conditions for pilots at Air Berlin's charter airline unit LTU, with working hours on long-haul flights at the core of the dispute.
The move came a week after VC suspended strike action at Lufthansa that had left thousands of travellers stranded around the world, and ahead of an expected work stoppage by cabin crew at British Airways.
Air Berlin and VC met on Wednesday and agreed to hold wage talks on unresolved issues, Air Berlin said on Thursday.

La deuxième compagnie aérienne allemande Air Berlin a annoncé mardi la réduction de ses commandes d'appareils auprès de Boeing, en raison d'un contexte de marché actuellement délicat pour le secteur aérien.

Air Berlin a signé un accord avec l'avionneur américain prévoyant la réduction de ses commandes fixes de Boeing 787 à 15 appareils, contre 25 jusqu'à présent, soit une économie de 1,7 milliard de dollars (1,24 md EUR), selon un communiqué. Les premières livraisons sont prévues en novembre 2015. En outre, les options de commandes sur d'autres Boeing 787 sont passées de 10 à 5 appareils, selon le communiqué.

Enfin Air Berlin a également reporté la livraison de 9 Boeing 737 pour après 2015, alors qu'elle était prévue à l'origine pour 2010-2011. L'accord représente un "net allègement de nos engagements financiers" pour Air Berlin, qui veut considérablement limiter ses investissements, a commenté le patron de la compagnie aérienne Ulf Hüttmeyer, cité dans le communiqué.

Air Berlin a annoncé jeudi une perte nette provisoire de 9,5 millions d'euros pour 2009, un résultat en net progrès sur un an.
En 2008 la deuxième compagnie aérienne allemande avait en effet essuyé une perte nette de 83,5 millions d'euros, a rappelé Air Berlin, dans un communiqué.

La compagnie a profité l'an dernier d'un effet fiscal positif de 12 millions d'euros.

Air Berlin a pourtant subi les effets de la crise du trafic aérien l'an dernier, ce qui a entraîné une baisse de 4,4% de son chiffre d'affaires, à 3,24 milliards d'euros.

Son résultat opérationnel Ebit est cependant passé de 2 millions d'euros en 2008 à 28,5 millions d'euros en 2009.

Dopé par ces chiffres, le titre gagnait 2,08% à 4,08 euros jeudi à 15H40 GMT.

Il est coté sur le segment SDax des petites valeurs. Air Berlin publiera le détail de ses résultats le 25 mars.
