Despite the presence of Korean Air and China Southern, alliance Skyteam continues to lack visibility in Asia, a comment which does not seem to please Pierre Gourgeon, president and CEO of Air France-KLM, the driving force behind the alliance.
“This is not true! We have a very strong presence in Korea, Japan, and China, especially with our partners Korean Air and China Southern Airlines,” he said during a recent press conference in Paris. However, he is prompt to recognize that Skyteam remains weak in markets such as south Asia (India) and southeast Asia.
Year 2010 should bring welcome changes. Gourgeon confirms that Vietnam Airlines will enter the alliance by next year helping Skyteam to cover extensively southeast Asia from both Vietnam hubs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Vietnam Airlines is now engaged into a modernization process prior to becoming an official member in June 2010. Since 2007, the airline has ordered 36 Airbus A-321, two Airbus A-350 900XWB, 16 Boeing B787 Dreamliners, and 11 ATR 72. Mid-November, the airline announced its intention to acquire four Airbus A380 with the contract being possibly finalized during the first quarter of 2010. Vietnam Airlines has currently a fleet of 52 planes flying 19 domestic and 25 international routes with a total passengers’ number of over nine million. It expects to triple its fleet and passengers number by 2020.
The airlines' network has been reorganized to shorten transit time and improve transfers at HCM City airport, and it has recently increased the number of its weekly flights to Paris CDG, Air France-KLM's main hub in Europe. Vietnam Airlines now flies eight times per week, up by two frequencies. Europe represents a turnover of €165 million in 2008 with three flights to Russia, Germany, and France. “We are currently working all together to bring Vietnam Airlines IT system to Skyteam’s standards”, said Gourgeon.
A new partner to be officially confirmed soon is Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda. “We are very pleased to support the candidacy of Garuda, a long-standing partner of us in Asia,” explained Peter Hartman, president and CEO of KLM. “In our last meeting, we decided to support Garuda’s process into Skyteam in conjunction with Korean Air and Delta Air Lines. I believe, however, that the process would take a year until Garuda’s official entry,” he explained. Year 2011 is also seen as the possible entry date by Garuda management as recently confirmed in exclusivity to eTurboNews by Emirsyah Satar, president and CEO of Garuda. “The soonest, the better. We now work on upgrading our reservation’s system and look to expand our fleet from 66 to 116 aircraft by 2014”, said Satar.
Air France is also looking closely at Japan Airlines. Hearing about the airline’s financial difficulties, Air France-KLM has joined Delta Air Lines and Skyteam to bid for a US$1.02 billion financial pakage to save the airline. The proposal by Delta and SkyTeam includes, among others, a US$500 million equity injection from SkyTeam and a US$300 million revenue guarantee from Delta. The Japanese carrier has just received the government’s approval for a loan of about yen 100 billion from the Development Bank of Japan bridge loans to keep itself operational after being granted authorization by the government. Gourgeon remains cautious about the outcome. “I can’t say more about it. It all depends [on] discussions’ results between the Japanese government and JAL management. We still do not know if the Japanese government will allow the entry of a foreign carrier into JAL ownership,” he said.
In India, Air France seems to have temporarily abandoned the idea to link up with an Indian carrier. “The air travel market is currently very difficult with few good opportunities to find a partner,” said Gourgeon cautiously.

Garuda Indonesia confirmed yesterday -- 03/02/2010 -- that it has canceled its orders for 10 787s. The order originally was placed in September 2005.
President and CEO Emirsyah Satar told ATWOnline here that the commitment has been swapped for 10 777-300ER****** orders. "We simply couldn't wait for the 787," he said.

This year Garuda will take delivery of 23 737-800s and one A330-200 as part of its ongoing Quantum Leap program that will see its fleet grow from 58 in 2008 to 116 in 2014 comprising 90 737-800s, 20 A330s and six 777-300ERs.****** It plans to launch an IPO in the second half of 2010 to raise $300 million.

Garuda Indonesia is selling four [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] aircraft, as it seeks to renew its fleet.
The carrier will conduct an auction for the aircraft, registration numbers PK-GWK, PK-GWM, PK-GWO, and PK-GWP, it says.
All four aircraft have CFM International [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]-3C-1 engines and were built in 1993, says Flightglobal's ACAS database.
Garuda will publish the auction's terms and conditions on 4 March, says Garuda. Survey of the aircraft's documents and records will be held from 15 February to 8 March at Garuda's maintenance facility at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, says the airline.

The carrier is retiring its older aircraft and taking delivery of new ones as it seeks to renew its fleet and expand its operations. Garuda plans to raise $300 million through its initial public offering, which will be launched in the middle of this year, and is close to completing its debt restructuring process.

Air Canada, Garuda, Thai and Air Austral could sublease Air India’s 777s
Air Canada, Thai Airways International, Garuda Indonesia and Reunion Island-based Austral have expressed interest in subleasing [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]-200LRs and 777-300ERs from Air India.
Earlier this year Air India announced plans to lease out a large portion of its new 777 fleet as part of a cost cutting programme. Air India chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav says the carrier has so far received responses from Air Canada, Thai, Garuda and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].
"There are four responses. We are evaluating them," Jadhav told ATI during a Star Alliance event in Sao Paulo.
Air India is in the process of joining Star while Air Canada and Thai are already in the alliance.
Air India initially indicated it was seeking to lease out nine 777s. But Jadhav says the carrier is now negotiating subleases on six aircraft - a mix of 777-200LRs and 777-300ERs.
"We got six to lease out," he says. "The evaluation is going on right now."
Jadhav declined to say when a deal would be concluded. He says the carrier is now looking at when it can remove the aircraft from its operation and when the four interested carriers are able to take the aircraft.
"We are looking at the timelines," Jadhav says. "The timelines have to match up."
According to Flightglobal's ACAS database, Air India currently operates eight 777-200LRs and 10 777-300ERs. All 17 of these aircraft are less than three years old.

Garuda Indonesia orders six A330-200s

Garuda Indonesia, the national carrier of Indonesia, has placed a firm order with Airbus for six long range A330-200 aircraft. Scheduled for delivery from the fourth quarter of 2012, the newly ordered aircraft will join a fleet of four recently delivered leased A330-200s and six owned A330-300s already in service at the airline.

Garuda Indonesia's newly ordered A330-200s will feature a high comfort two class layout for operation on services to destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to the Middle East and Europe. The aircraft will be powered by Trent 700 engines from Rolls-Royce.

"Since we started operating the A330-200 last year, the aircraft has proven itself to be a winner for us both in terms of operating economics and passenger appeal," said Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO Garuda Indonesia. "The extended range, low operating costs and the high levels of comfort make it the perfect vehicle for us to bring our new premium service to more international destinations in a profitable and efficient way."

"We are extremely pleased to reaffirm our long-term partnership with Garuda Indonesia with this new order," said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO. "The order underscores yet again the A330's status as the most efficient aircraft in-service in the mid-size category today and the right aircraft right now for airlines across the globe."

The modern and efficient A330 is one of the most widely used widebody aircraft in service today. To date, Airbus has won more than 1,000 firm orders for the various versions of the aircraft. More than 700 A330s have already been delivered and the aircraft is currently flying with over 80 operators worldwide.

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, announces that Garuda Indonesia has signed an additional contract for Rolls-Royce TotalCare® to support four leased Trent 700-powered A330-200 aircraft, for the next seven years.

Garuda Indonesia has been a Trent 700 customer since 1996 and already has a TotalCare agreement in place to cover the engines that power its first six A330s. This new contract extends cover across new, leased A330s.

Garuda in line to be next SkyTeam partner

Garuda Indonesia is likely to be the next airline after Taiwan's China Airlines to formally apply to join the SkyTeam alliance.
The company plans to hold an event in November in Jakarta for the signing ceremony, say industry sources.
It will be the first carrier from the country to join an alliance, and it comes after several months of negotitions beyween the carrier and SkyTeam.
Leo van Wijk, chairman of SkyTeam's board, says that, as negotiations are ongoing, he is would not be able to say much about the carrier's potential membership. "We are still in discussions and unable specify a timeframe for Garuda," he adds.
Garuda has been planning to join SkyTeam and have an initial public offering as part of its plans to grow its network and fleet over the next few years.

Garuda Indonesia and GE Capital Aviation Service (GECAS) today announced the signing of and operating lease for six Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft, and three CFM56-7B engines.

The agreement was signed in Jakarta by Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO Garuda Indonesia, and GECAS Executive Vice-President, Mike Jones.

Three aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in June, September and October 2013.

The other three aircraft will be delivered in June, September, and October 2014.

Garuda to add 18 regional jets by 2015

Garuda Indonesia will begin a competition this year to select its first regional jets.
The airline hopes to add around 18 sub-hundred seat aircraft to its fleet by 2015 to serve low-density high-yield feeder routers within Indonesia, says CEO Emirsyah Satar in an interview with ATI's sister publication Airline Business. A decision will be made this year, he adds.
The company will be study both CRJs and Embraer E-Jets, he adds. While it has not ruled out looking at the Mitsubishi MRJ regional jet, he believes that its entry into service may not meet Garuda's timeline. Jets also make more sense than turboprops, he says.
"Regional jets will give us a lot of autonomy as there are fast-growing cities within Indonesia that require direct connections. Say if you want to fly from Balikpapan and Banjarmasin - it is tough to operate larger aircraft, but a regional jet would fit such low-density and high-yield routes," says Satar.
Garuda hopes to have a fleet of 153 aircraft by 2015, almost double the 86 aircraft that it now operates according to Flightglobal's ACAS database. Apart from the regional jets, these will include 10 Boeing 777-300ERs, 18-20 Airbus A330s and four dedicated freighters. The rest will be Boeing 737-800s.
The airline is likely to order additional 777s and A330s in the coming years as it grows its medium and long-haul network, says Satar. "The yield is much better on the newer aircraft and that is what the airline is focusing on," says Satar.
The airline hopes to phase out its older Boeing 737-300/400/500 narrowbodies and Boeing 747-400s in the coming years as these are "either not as fuel-efficient or carry too few passengers", he adds.
In the second phase of its fleet growth, Satar says that carrier will assess the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. These are likely to replace its older 777-200s and [url=http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/boeing 767.html]Boeing 767[/url]-300ERs. Garuda to order up to 50 narrowbodies at Paris Air Show

Garuda Indonesia plans to order up to 50 narrowbody aircraft for its low-cost subsidiary Citilink at the upcoming Paris Air Show.
Half of these will be firm orders while the remaining 25 are options, said Garuda's CEO Emirsyah Satar. He declined to specify the aircraft type, but said he expects deliveries to begin from 2014.
Citilink currently operates eight [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] Classics which Garuda plans to retire once it receives new aircraft. Satar has said, however, that this does not necessarily mean that Garuda would favour the 737.
The airline also plans to lease at least five 737s by year-end or early 2012 to help it grow Citilink's route network. "The new aircraft will come in 2014 and that is too late. So we plan to lease some aircraft before that," said Satar.

It is looking to order 18 to 25 regional jets to operate on low-density domestic routes, such as from its new hub in Makassar, said Satar.
