Loftleiðir marketed the CL-44J under the name "Rolls-Royce 400 PropJet".

This led to the confusion that the CL-44J is sometimes referred to as the Canadair-400.

Loftleiðir Icelandic Airlines merged with [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 1973 and became today's Flugleiðir being the Icelandic name and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in English.

CL-44J - four CL-44D4 aircraft stretched by Canadair on request of Icelandic Airlines Loftleiðir, with a section, 10 ft 1 in (3.07 m) forward of the wing, and another section of 5 ft 1 in (1.55 m) aft of the wing.

This enabled the installation of 29 extra seats, bringing the capacity to 189 passengers.

The [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] stayed the same since the extra weight was compensated by removing the center wing tanks.

Therefore it can be said that the stretch was a trade of capacity for range.

The Skymonster is based on the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] freighter (itself a derivative of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]).

It features an enlarged fuselage, like the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] which was produced by Jack Conroy's previous company, [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

History

The Skymonster first flew on 26 November 1969, under the US registration "N447T".

The CL-44 from which it had been converted also bore this same registration, and was previously operated by the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

Only one [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] was built. Another one was ordered, but the CL-44 on which it was to be based crashed before delivery.

In 1970, the prototype was leased by [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], who gave it the name "Skymonster".

Despite its being renamed "Bahamas Trader" later on, the name Skymonster stuck, and it is now commonly known as this.

In 1978, it was bought by [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

In 1982, it went to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], who re-registered it with the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] registration EI-BND.

The aircraft went into storage in 1993, but only 2 months later, it was bought by a leasing company, and was leased to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

Its next lease was to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 1997, under the registration 4K-GUP.

In March 1998, it was leased to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

In August 1998 it went to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and was registered 9G-LCA.

In 1999, it was placed into storage, initially in the USA, but then it was flown to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], UK, where it was scheduled to be scrapped.

In December 2006 the aircraft was registered in the Philippines (RP-C8023) and was being prepared for service in Australia.

In March 2008, it was reported that the British [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] had refused to lift an order grounding the aircraft which was made in [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], due to concerns over the aircraft's maintenance.

As of March 2008, the Skymonster was still at Hurn.

In August 2008, it was reported that the aircraft was in the process of being scrapped, however as of September this was on hold amid further rumours about donation to a museum in Germany.
