F-7W First J-7 export model with a HUD. The smaller canopy and the small window behind it were replaced by a larger canopy so that the small window no longer existed on J-7 models from then on. FT-7 Export version of the JJ-7. It used the domestic Chinese Type-II ejection seat, replacing the Chinese copy of the original Soviet design, because the Soviet design was less reliable.

FT-7A Conversion package offered to Soviet MiG-21U trainer customers such as Egypt to replace the original Soviet-built ejection seats with Chinese built Type-II ejection seat, and a rear hinged canopy that would be jettisoned before the ejection seat instead of the forward hinged canopy jettisoned with the ejection seat.

FT-7P Trainer version of the F-7MP and F-7P. Unlike most Chinese built J-7 trainers which lack radars, the FT-7P was armed with the same radar on the single seat version and thus fully capable for combat.

FT-7PG FT-7 trainer variant of the F-7PG for the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]. The rear seat is 0.5 metre higher than the front seat, so the periscope is eliminated.

After a successful deal with Chinese in the early 1980s resulting in the F-7M, the United Kingdom offered a further upgrade to improve the performance of the F-7M by adopting either [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] or [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] PW 1120 turbofan engines. The radar options would include the Red Fox, a repackaged version of the Blue Fox radar used on [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], or the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].
Although radar tests were successful, the upgrade was rejected before any engine tests, because a single radar or a single engine had cost more than a new J-7 (2 million [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], 1984 price). The name, Super-7, however, was retained to be used for the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] light-weight fighter.

Project Sabre II

Project Sabre II was an attempt to develop a low-cost [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] based on an existing design, the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] (a Chinese derivative of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]).

The project was initiated by the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] was contracted to work with specialists from the PAF and China to define and develop the concept. The PAF had left the project by March
1989 because it was considered uneconomic.^{[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]}^{[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]} In November 1988 it was reported that Grumman and CATIC would begin a new study to upgrade the F-7M into the Super 7. China continued with the project until it was re-branded as the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in the early 1990s.

Origins

In 1984 the latest export version of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], an extensively upgraded form of the F-7B incorporating various Western systems and designated F-7M Airguard, was released.

Pakistan was interested in developing and manufacturing an improved version of the F-7M to replace its large fleet of [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and move Pakistan's aviation industry forward.

Grumman Aerospace of the United States was contracted to do a 5 month feasibility study and in September 1987 the F-7 Sabre II was revealed.

After becoming interested in the F-7M, the PAF initiated Project Sabre II to re-design and upgrade the Chengdu F-7M.

In January 1987, a contract was awarded to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] of Bethpage, New York, to study and define the Sabre II concept with cooperation from [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and PAF specialists.

The study was completed after seven months and concluded that the project was a financial risk due to very high costs
and other options were much more cost-effective, despite the prospects of producing Sabre II in Pakistan and giving the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] more experience and technical knowledge.

In September 1987 it was reported that a 5 month feasibility study had been completed by Grumman, working in cooperation with CAC, CATIC and the PAF, in which the Chengdu F-7M was radically upgraded.

Known as Sabre II, the upgrade involved fitting the F-7M with modern Western radar, avionics, engine and a re-designed forward fuselage.

It was stated that Sabre II would replace 150 Shenyang F-6 in PAF service.

A picture showed that the F-7's nose inlet had been replaced with a solid nose radome and a new pair of air inlets were mounted on the sides of the fuselage under the cockpit.

The Pratt & Whitney [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], an afterburning derivative of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] turbojet producing 16,000 pounds-force (71 kN) of thrust, was also proposed for installation on the Sabre II.

Project Sabre II was terminated in 1989, due to the breaking of relations between the United States and China after the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and the subsequent US-imposed sanctions that prevented access to any US technology in the project.

Sanctions for Pakistan followed soon after, with [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], about which the US had known for some years, cited as the reason.

The Nuclear Program had an overarching effect on the Super-7 project.

While the US exhibited little tolerance with Pakistan's emerging nuclear aspirations after [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 1974, it tolerated the its nuclear program during the 80's due to the US desire for Pakistani cooperation, in order to defeat the Soviets in the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

Once the Soviet forces retreated, Pakistani cooperation was no longer required and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] were imposed under the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 1990.

This prevented the delivery of [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] aircraft already paid for by the PAF during the Afghan war, and efforts by the PAF to find a replacement failed (see [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]).
