Korean Air : KE : KAL
Korean Air sort la tête de l'eau. Trafic pax pas terrible et une des plus grosses cies cargo de la région.
Raisons annoncées : baisse du fioul et taux de changes plus favorables
Sur Forbes :
SEOUL, South Korea -- Korean Air Lines Co. announced its first net profit in seven quarters, helped by cheaper fuel costs and foreign exchange gains, despite a decline in sales.
Korean Air earned 78.5 billion won ($63.5 million) in the three months ended June 30, the company said Friday in a regulatory filing. Korean Air posted net loss of 289 billion won a year earlier.
The result brought to an end six straight quarterly losses for the country's largest airline. Among passenger airlines, Korean Air is also the world's biggest carrier of international commercial cargo.
Sales during the second quarter fell 16 percent to 2.07 trillion won.
"Korean Air swung to a net profit in the second quarter of 2009 due to lower fuel prices and a strengthening won against" the dollar, spokesman Shin Muchol said in an e-mailed statement. "We expect to see stronger sales in the second half of 2009."
In a separate statement, Korean Air said that aircraft fuel costs fell 40 percent from the same period last year, while the average price per gallon of fuel declined 56 percent.

KAl, ça va plutôt bien, merci pour eux
"surge in cargo & recovery in international pax traffic".
Allez, de l'optimisme.
Sur Flight :
---------------------------
Korean Air (KAL) posted a 581% growth in profit for its fourth fiscal quarter, driven by a surge in cargo and a recovery in international passenger traffic.
Profit for the quarter ending 31 December 2009 was 154 billion won ($134 million), up from 22.6 billion won in the corresponding quarter a year ago, says KAL.
Operating revenue held steady at 2.6 trillion won "in spite of a challenging operating environment for the aviation industry", says the airline.
It posted a net income of 122.3 billion won, compared with a loss of 644 billion won a year ago.
Total operating expenses fell 9.9% to 2.4 trillion won, it says.
"Lower fuel prices and a stronger won have helped reduce the airline's operating expenses."
In terms of international passenger traffic, RPKs rose 11.3% while capacity, as measured in ASKs, grew 6.5%.
On the cargo front, total FTKs increased 15.2%, says the airline.
"The cargo business has picked up in September 2009 and reached new heights in the fourth quarter of 2009," it adds.
"The increased cargo traffic coincided with the usual busy season for the cargo business ahead of festivities such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, while a recovery in consumer spending worldwide also fuelled the growth in this segment," says the
carrier.
KAL expects to receive seven more aircraft this year, and another 15 in 2011.
It has 57 aircraft on order, including 10 [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] A380s and 10 [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] 787s, says Flightglobal's database ACAS.
"Total investment amount in fleet purchase, upgrade and refurbishment will increase by over 50% in 2010," says the carrier.
It also expects further growth in the cargo sector. "With the turnaround in cargo demand and the pick up of exports volume, the airline expects that this business segment will be the growth driver again in 2010 and revenue generated will reach another peak," says the airline.
It will continue stringent cost controls and network expansion this year, it adds.

Merci Jeannot

L'international porte traditionnellement Korean, grand acheteur Boeing. Par choix plus politique.

Source ATWonline :
Korean Air reported third-quarter net income of KRW583.8 billion ($521 million), more than double a KRW264 billion profit in the year-ago period, attributing the earnings increase to "substantial growth in international passenger traffic and surging demand for cargo traffic."
Quarterly revenue jumped 26.2% to KRW3.13 trillion, outpacing a 16.5% heightening of expenses to KRW2.77 trillion, producing a record operating profit of KRW358.1 billion, well more than three times operating income of KRW100.1 billion in the September 2009 quarter.
In a statement, the carrier cited “the better-than-expected economic rebound in China and Southeast Asia countries, as well as increased world travel during the summer vacation [season].
” During the quarter, Korea-outbound traffic rose 23% while “transit and overseas passenger volume” climbed 8%.
Third-quarter international passenger traffic rose 6.3% year-over-year to 15.43 billion RPKs on a 1.3% upping of capacity to 19.68 billion ASKs, producing a load factor of 78.4%, up 3.7 points. International passenger yield lifted 24% to KRW107.
Domestic passenger traffic increased 7.3% to 719 million RPKs on a 4.5% lowering of capacity to 1.07 billion ASKs, creating a load factor of 67%, up 7.3 points. Domestic passenger yield rose 8.1% to KRW198.5. Cargo traffic heightened 13.1% to 2.4 billion FTKs on a 15.6% lift in capacity to 3.22 billion ATKs, producing a load factor of 74.7%, down 1.7 points. Cargo yield jumped 28% to KRW360.1.
Cargo comprises 30.2% of KE's total revenue.
"The growth in cargo traffic has been maintained since the second half of 2009 as a result of increasing exports such as semiconductors and automobile parts," the airline noted, pointing out that "cargo demand in Japan increased and revenue generated from this region recorded a stunning year-on-year increase of 81%."
