BAE Systems Regional Aircraft

The [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]/[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] RJ-based, four-engined ABJ has an airliner-sized cabin and "represents a good value proposition" in a beleaguered market, says [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], vice-president of sales and marketing at BAE's regional aircraft unit.
"There are people out there whose wallet is more important than their ego," he adds, acknowledging the type's unglamorous image. "If they want a big aeroplane, this represents a very good, cost-effective way of getting an aeroplane that is suitable for most business jet missions."

Doughty admits that the ABJ does not have the range for transatlantic flights, but argues that many of the larger business jets, on which operators "can quite happily spend $16 million", are confined to 1-2h sectors, rather than flying long haul.

BAE has [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] placed the price of a pre-conversion BAe 146-300 at around $2 million, and that of a pre-conversion RJ85 at between $5.75 million and $6.25 million.
In 2009, BAE Systems sold an RJ100 to Abu Dhabi's [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], for conversion to VVIP format; a BAe 146 to UK-based Gill Airways, for deployment as a 46-seat executive shuttle; and a BAe 146-100 to another UK company, [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], which was seeking to fit an aircraft with a VIP interior.
These transactions came as BAE increased its marketing spend in the business segment, promoting the ABJ at last year's [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] exhibition and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

While the passenger market remains the primary focus, business aviation deals can make "a very significant contribution" to the bottom line, says Doughty. "We think there is scope out there, even in a difficult market, for us to get some more," he says.
There are more than 20 BAe 146/RJs in operation as VIP and corporate shuttle aircraft, BAE estimates. The RJ70 is seen by the company as "ideally suited" for ABJ conversion.

BAE Systems is offering its out-of-production regional aircraft as a bridging solution for armies and air forces affected by military transport delivery delays, and is looking to build on a breakthrough deal with a UK Ministry of Defence contractor.

In December, BAE revealed that Titan Airways had leased one of its BAe 146s to fulfil a six-month MoD contract in the Middle East.
Titan, a UK-based charter specialist, had been seeking an aircraft to fly "several times a week" between Bahrain, Muscat in Oman and Minhad in the United Arab Emirates, transporting "around 45 passengers" and freight on these sectors.

Now, BAE's regional aircraft division is seeking to expand its presence in military markets. "We're aware that a number of replacement programmes for transport aircraft are running significantly late, and that there may be some opportunities to provide interim capacity," says Steve Doughty, vice-president of sales and marketing at the division.

Deployment of an [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] RJ or [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] could allow a military user to "get 50% of the capability of a specialist aeroplane at 10% of the price" when faced with budgetary constraints or technical delays, he argues.

BAE believes there is also straightforward replacement business to be won, estimating that, globally, over 1,700 ageing turboprop and jet airliners are used for transport and communication tasks by 150 air arms.
Additionally, regional aircraft could be used to free up high-value assets deployed on missions beneath their capability. "Burning up cycles on a [[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] C-130] Hercules carrying passengers around, or carrying mail, does not sound like a good use of those assets," says Doughty.

"Use those assets at what they're good for: rear loading ramp capability and special mission operations."
BAE first outlined its so-called 146M passenger/freighter proposal at last September's DSEi exhibition in the UK.

BAE Systems announced today that it will offer Russian airlines the Avro RJ85 regional jetliner as an
immediate replacement for ageing aircraft operated on domestic and regional routes.


A fleet of 13 ex-Lufthansa RJ85s are coming back off-lease to BAE Systems beginning in March and continuing through to 2011.

This particular variant is certificated under the Russian Interstate Aviation Committee airworthiness rules and so is
capable of being operated in Russia and CIS countries.


Russian airlines have long recognised the value and utility of the ‘100-seat’ regional jet sector and over 320 aircraft in this category are currently operational, but with an average age of 22 years.


Among these are nearly 200 Russian aircraft, such as the Tupolev Tu-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42 which are nearing the end of their useful lives, are relatively fuel inefficient and have high operating costs and are, in some cases, noise
restricted and so unable to be operated to and from the European Union.


New modern generation Russian and CIS designed and built replacement aircraft will not be available in the volume production quantities necessary for some years to come.

The Antonov An-148 has only just entered service, while the Sukhoi Superjet is still going through its certification programme.

A key element of the BAE Systems offer is that whilst the RJ85 can provide immediate capacity to help solve airlines’ needs, this used aircraft solution is complementary to the aspirations of the Russian aerospace industry as it
gradually gears up to volume production to offer replacement aircraft in sufficient numbers.

Nigel Benson, Director Sales and Leasing for BAE Systems Asset Management said today:

“Our offering to Russian airlines is simple. We know they urgently need capacity now as the existing aircraft will not remain in service for much longer.
The RJ85 is affordable and is fully backed by BAE Systems with a complete suite of support services.”

He added:

The ex-Lufthansa RJ85 aircraft are naturally to a high specification with 93 seats and are fully European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) compliant.
They are fitted with long-range tanks and are to a common specification.
They are fully Stage 3 noise complaint and are capable of meeting the proposed Stage 4 limits.

With a long service life remaining, they will make ideal interim aircraft for airlines that are waiting for locally produced aircraft to come on stream over the next five years.”

The aircraft are priced at $5-6 million each, and BAE believes they offer a good alternative for Russian airlines that rely on ageing fleets of [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] Tu-134s and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] Yak-42s for their regional jet requirements.
"We have in the past talked to Russian airlines about the type, but this is the first time we've made a concerted effort in the market," says BAE.
BAE is looking to sell 11 93-seat RJ85s of a 1994-5 vintage coming off lease from Lufthansa over the next 12 months

The RJ85, unlike its predecessor the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], is certificated with Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee following delivery of three aircraft to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] in 1997. The regional jets would be subject to Russian import tariffs, but these would be lower than those applying to newer equipment.
BAE is willing to sell the RJ85s singly or as a fleet, but it is not contemplating leasing the aircraft.

.....de Havilland’s original proposal, the DH121, was a larger and more powerful aircraft than the Trident ended up being. BEA ("British European Airways") signed a Letter of Intent in 1957, which gave the go ahead for the development program to begin.
A full family of aircraft with higher capacity and new upgraded engines was intended.

The Government decided, before production started, to get the Americans involved in the extended project. A US delegation including people from Boeing was given full access to the plans, but nothing came of it.
Soon after, the Boeing 727 emerged and eventually took the market, with a very similar design to the originally planed DH121........

One thing that the Trident did have in its favour was the ability to land ‘blind’. The automatic landing system, developed with Smiths Industries, was finally given full CAA approval in 1972. However by this time the Boeing 727 was established as the market leader and the choice of most foreign airlines.

117 Tridents were built in total, with the last coming off the production line in March 1978. One notable sale was the 35 aircraft sold to the Chinese national airline CAAC. The Trident was CAAC’s first western built short haul jet airliner.

	In its later years with BA the Trident was a success as the airlines domestic workhorse, flying the ‘shuttle’ routes, linking the UK airports.

BEA and British Airways always kept faith with the Trident and it became one of BA’s longest serving aircraft. It was a very common sight throughout the whole of the UK during the 1980s, as it flew the BA ‘Shuttle’ service, connecting the major airports. It was finally retired early in 1986, after clocking up 22 years service.

It is not known for certain, but it is believed that the Trident remained in service with the Chinese Air Force until the mid 90’s.

Starbow, a startup airline based in Accra, said it commenced services in late September.

The carrier is operating domestic flights in Ghana using two BAe 146-300s leased from Riva Investments, which purchased them from Falko Regional Aircraft ([Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]). The aircraft are configured with 94 seats, including eight in business class.

"Domestic services envisaged for Starbow include routes centered on Accra and the important regional city of Kumasi and linking them to other destinations such as Tamale and Takoradi," CEO Simon Saoud said in a statement. "The company believes in the considerable potential for airline business in West Africa."

While operating domestically initially, Saoud said the airline "plans to offer direct air services to the capital cities of neighboring countries such as Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Monrovia, Liberia; Bamako, Mali; Niamey, Niger; Lagos, Nigeria; and Freetown, Sierra Leone."

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Brock Friesen, cited as the carrier's co-CEO, said there is a significant need for more air connections between West African cities. "I can't think of anywhere in the world where you have so many large cities with less than or one flight a day," he said. "If you look at a city pair like the routes into and out of Accra, which is a major regional center in West Africa, it's hard to find many cities that have daily flights."

BAe 146 takes on firefighting role in Texas

Prince Edward Island, Canada-based Tronos has converted a BAe 146 into an aerial firefighting tanker, that is now being used on wildfires in Texas by Neptune Aviation Services.

The four-engine aircraft is equipped with a 11,375 litre (3,005USgal) tank under the centre fuselage to carry water or fire retardant, that is gravity-dropped through doors.

Tronos operates a fleet of 20 BAe 146s, leased for speciality services to airlines and other operators. The US Forest Service approved the tanker conversion for firefighting applications after field tests in Missoula, Montana this summer, Tronos said.

"The Forestry Service last approved a new large air tanker capable of carrying 3,000 gallons of retardant in the mid-1980s, when the P-3 Orion was first used in firefighting operations," said Tronos. "Demand for new aircraft is expected to be strong in the face of the increased incidence of major fires, as the aging fleet of air tankers is retired."

The company said it intends to convert more BAe 146s into the firefighting role for Neptune.
