The national carrier lost Bt21 billion last year when the airport shutdowns ruined the high season. It swung back to a net profit of Bt7.9 billion in the first quarter of this year but is expected to post losses again in the second quarter due to the August violence. The third quarter is the low season for this business.
THAI said last week it managed to reduce non-fuel expenses by Bt8.1 billion during the first five months of this year.
Under the restructuring plan, THAI would purchase 20 Airbus A321-400 aircraft to replace old Boeing 737-400 planes, which are used in regional routes, particularly to China and Japan.
Narongsak said the plan is being revised to fit the new business structure and it is not finalised if the
number of new aircraft would be maintained.
"The new president will make the decision on this, before it is submitted for Cabinet approval."
Piyasvasti Amranand will take over the controls as the new THAI president in October, but has started to receive information from his predecessor.
Narongsak said THAI is also staying with the scheduled delivery of six superjumbo A380s in late 2012, to profit from the high season. The six aircraft will service routes with heavy traffic and to airports with limited flight slots like London, Frankfurt and Paris.
To further cut expenses and raise revenue, THAI will also open bidding for its four A340-500s this month,
targeting to reap about US$100 million (Bt3.5 billion) from each plane.
Narongsak said interest has been shown for its ultra-long-range aircraft, which used to ply the Bangkok-New York
route. While the sale is underway, the aircraft now serve the Bangkok-Los Angeles and Bangkok-Oslo routes.
Earlier, THAI expected to lose about Bt4.2 billion from the four aircraft.

Thai Airways said on Friday it would take delivery of its first three A380 superjumbos from Airbus in 2012 and another three in 2013.
The airline, which is in the process of restructuring its operations and management, has already negotiated loans with foreign financial institutions to pay for the aircraft, Chairman Wallop Bhukkanasut told reporters after a board meeting.
"The first delivery of A380 aircraft will be in September 2012. Another two will be gradually delivered later in the year," he said.
In July, the airline said it had negotiated with Airbus to delay the delivery of six A380 superjumbos to December 2012 from late 2010 because of a downturn in the airline business.
The national carrier would decide in December whether to raise funds through a share issue, Wallop said, adding this was among several options the airline was considering to raise capital as part of its long-term restructuring plans.
It aimed to boost earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to THB25 billion - THB30 billion baht (USD$735 million - USD$882 million) this year and made THB12 billion - THB13 billion in the first half, Wallop said. It had EBITDA of THB13.6 billion last year.
Thai Airways is among several Asian airlines struggling to cope with reduced travel because of the global economic crisis and a surge in fuel costs last year. Political unrest in Thailand and the H1N1 flu pandemic have added to its problems.
It made a record net loss in the fourth quarter of 2008 because of the economic slowdown and Bangkok airport closures caused by political protests.
Further unrest this year has caused a big drop in tourist arrivals, but the airline expects travel demand to pick up in the third and fourth quarters, the high season for Thai tourism.
Wallop said its cabin factor -- the percentage of seats sold -- rose to more than 76 percent in August.
The state-owned airline is aiming for a cabin factor of 73-74 percent for 2009 as a whole, similar to last year's 75 percent. It reported 71.2 percent in the first half.

The US planemaker Boeing will be strenuously promoting its B777 series as replacements for the ageing high-capacity jets Thai Airways International will be retiring in the next five years.
Boeing believes the track record, updated technology, and improved efficiency and economy of one of its flagship planes will have strong appeal in the flag carrier's forthcoming major fleet modernisation plan.
On THAI's drawing board is a plan to acquire four to six wide-body long-haul aircraft and five to seven twin-aisle jets for medium-haul operations over the next five years, according to a THAI insider.
Over the long term, the national carrier will also be seeking to replace its old aircraft with new ones as part of a strategy to rejuvenate its fleet, whose average age is 11.6 years, in order to appeal to passengers and take advantage of better fuel efficiency.
New planes are meant to replace THAI's old jets such as B747-400s and Airbus's A300-600s that are approaching their end of service. These planes are less economically efficient and face future flying restrictions in some regions due to high carbon dioxide emissions.
Larry Loftis, vice-president for Boeing's 777 programme, sees the B777-300ER, the long-range variant of the twin-engine B777 series, as an ideal replacement for THAI's 18 B747-400s, some of which are 15 years old.
The sizes of the B747-400 and B777- 300ER are similar, their ranges are comparable, and the fuel efficiency from operating a twin-jet 777 versus the four-engine jumbo jet are reasons for THAI to consider it as a replacement, he said.
The 777 costs $257 million or more depending on options, and can carry up to 365 passengers 14,685 kilometres,
such as Bangkok to New York, non-stop.
"We've seen, over the last few years, a number of operators replacing their old 747s with the triple seven," he said.
Chris Flint, director of sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Thailand, said: "Replacing the 747-400s with 777-300ERs makes sense for European Union routes because of the unknown impacts of cap-and-trade emissions policies."
Boeing will also push its new version of the 747 jumbo jet expected to be ready for flight early next year.
"For large markets that might have capacity restrictions, we certainly would recommend replacing the 747-400 with the new 747-8," said Mr Flint. "It really comes down to the size of the market, the frequency of service, the airline business model, and the nature of the market."
Boeing believes its 777 bests European rival Airbus's A340-600, a similar four-engine jet, due to new improvements.
"We tried to take technologies that were evolving with our 787 and 747-8 and apply them to the 777 family as part of the refinement," said Anita Polt, regional director for product development at Boeing.
Among the improvements is a new wing design featuring raked winglets, more efficient engines that emit 5-13% less carbon dioxide while being quieter, and greater application of advanced materials such as alloys and composites.
Boeing said sales performance of its B777 series over Airbus's A340 family bear these differences out.
Since the 777 programme was launched in October 1990 until July of this year, Boeing has received 1,116 orders by 56 operators including THAI. Airbus has only 558 orders, giving Boeing a 66% share.
There are 20 older B777 series aircraft operating in THAI's fleet. The flag carrier also has 10 older A340 series and 12 A330-300 jetliners operating, with eight more A330-300s slated for delivery between 2009 and 2010.

La compagnie aérienne, qui publiera ses résultats trimestriels le 16 novembre, a constaté une nette amélioration de son activité au cours des trois derniers mois, aussi bien dans son trafic passagers que dans son trafic cargo.
Mais une baisse du rendement par passager - une mesure clef de la rentabilité d'une compagnie - va peser sur les comptes trimestriels, a poursuivi Piyasvasti Amranand.
Thai Airways a fait état d'un bénéfice net de 2,47 milliards de bahts (environ 50 millions d'euros) au cours des six premiers mois de l'année.
Sur 2008, la compagnie avait subi une perte de 21,4 milliards de bahts, subissant, comme l'ensemble du secteur, les

Thai aurait eu des purchase rights sur des -600 ? Nouveau pour moi.

Southern Air d'une part, qui réceptionne des 777 F,
possède des 747 F, et pratique avec un certain succés aussi l'ACMI
Et Thai qui confie relance une activité cargo lourde, en louant des 777F

US cargo carrier Southern Air is placing into service at the end of this week the first of at least six [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] 777F freighters, initially operating the new aircraft type from a base in Bangkok as part of a wet-lease contract with
Thai Airways International.
Southern Air chief executive Daniel McHugh says the carrier took delivery of its first 777F in early February and,
following the completion of US Federal Aviation Administration-supervised proving flights in the USA, will be ferried to Bangkok this week ahead of a 27 February launch of revenue services.
He adds that a second 777 will be delivered to Southern on 2 March and will also be operated for Thai, which signed last year a two-year wet-lease contract fully covering Southern's first two 777s.
Both aircraft are being sourced through 12-year operating leases from OH Aircraft Acquisition, a leasing company in the portfolio of Southern owner Oak Hill Capital.
A US-based private equity firm, Oak Hill in early 2007 established a leasing subsidiary and ordered six 777Fs.
Later in 2007 Oak Hill acquired Southern.

McHugh says the final four 777Fs from Oak Hill's 2007 order are now tentatively scheduled for delivery in
late 2011 and 2012. But he says the exact timing of these deliveries and possible expansion of the 777 fleet beyond the initial six aircraft hinges on market demand.
"In the next few months we're in discussions with multiple customers. I'm more than cautiously optimistic that the demand is there," McHugh said in an interview with Flightglobal.

Thai Airways ne voit pas de relâche de la concurrence dans les prochaines années.
La compagnie a donc choisi de développer son réseau en privilégiant les routes les plus profitables et en laissant ses routes secondaires à sa filiale low-cost Nok Air.
Elle a surtout décidé de moderniser sa flotte et présenté son programme.
La modernisation se fera en trois phases d’ici 2019.
La première, d’aujourd’hui à 2014, verra le retrait de vingt-cinq appareils vieillissants de la flotte : six Boeing 747-400, dix Airbus A300-600, quatre A340-500, trois B737-400 et deux ATR-72.
Parallèlement, neuf appareils intègreront la flotte, trois A330-300 et six A380.
Une nouvelle commande sera également passée pour quinze appareils.
Thai Airways envisage d’acquérir sept appareils de trois cents places pour les affecter à ses routes régionales.
Ils s’accompagneront de huit appareils intercontinentaux de 350 places qui seront placés sur les liaisons depuis Bangkok vers Copenhagen, Stockholm, Los Angeles et Oslo.
De 2015 à 2019, trente-deux appareils seront retirés et au moins trente-huit devraient venir pallier leur départ et développer le réseau.
De 2020 à 2024, vingt appareils partiront et vingt-huit nouveaux intègreront la flotte.
Thai n’a cependant fait aucune référence à de possibles Airbus A321 et Dreamliner acquis en leasing en janvier 2008.
La compagnie avait en effet annoncé avoir approuvé la location de 14 Boeing 787-9, livrables entre 2012 et 2015, et de 20 monocouloirs de 179 sièges, attendus entre 2012 et 2017.
