Design and development


In 1940, [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] was working on a project called the Bristol Type 161 Beaumont, essentially a [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] variant of their [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

The Beaufighter itself had started as a bomber design, the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

The Beaumont never proceeded beyond the design stage.

In 1941, the new [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] called for a replacement for the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] that could carry
4,000 lb (1,150 kg) of bombs on daylight raids over [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

At the time, the RAF no longer had any medium bomber capable of carrying out daytime missions, and for this role any new design would have to have excellent performance as well as defensive armament.

Bristol responded with the Buckingham B. Mk 1, powered by the new very powerful [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and mounting gun installations in the nose, dorsal and ventral turrets.

Generally conventional in appearance, one unusual feature was that the bomb-aimer/navigator was housed in a mid-[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] ventral gondola.

This was part of an attempt to give all the crew positions unobstructed views and access to each others positions.

The bomb bay could hold a single 4,000 lb, two 2,000 lb, four 1,000 lb or six 500-lb bombs.

The rear of the gondola had a hydraulically powered turret with two 0.303 Browning machine guns.

The dorsal turret of Bristols own design carried 4 Brownings.

A further four fixed foward firing Brownings were controlled by the pilot.

The first flight took place on 4 February 1943.

During testing, the Buckingham exhibited poor stability which necessitated the enlargement of the twin [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] along with other modifications.

Operational history

By the time the design entered production, the requirements had already changed,
and this sort of duty generally fell to night missions with the[Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] instead.

However, the first batch of 119 had already been built, so after the first 54 bombers, the remainder were converted for high-speed courier duties with [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

The gun installations were removed and four seats and windows fitted in the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].

The aircraft were then designated Buckingham C. Mk I. Despite its 300 mph (480 km/h) speed and superior range to the Mosquito transports, with only room for four passengers, the Buckingham was rarely put to use.

Design and development


By 1945, there was a serious gap in performance between the so-called advanced trainers in use – such as the Avro
Anson, [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], dual-control [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] and [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] – and the combat aircraft which the pilots
would be expected to fly on graduation.

The Bristol response to [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] was to make further use of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] wing, with another new [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], in an aircraft developed as the Type 166.

The trainee and instructor were seated side-by-side with a wireless operator seated behind.

The Buckmaster was a propeller-driven, twin-engine mid-wing aircraft.

The retractable [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] was of conventional (tailwheel) configuration. The radial engines were equipped with four-blade propellers.

Considered the "highest performance trainer in the RAF," the Buckmaster continued to serve as a trainer until its eventual retirement in the mid-1950s.
