An Air Force Flight Test Center B-52H Stratofortress performs a captive carry flight of the X-51A WaveRider Dec. 9, 2009, over Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
The captive carry mission is a key test milestone to ready to light the X-51's scramjet engine during the vehicle's first powered hypersonic flight in early 2010.

Staff Sgt. Ben Norton works to regenerate a B-52 Stratofortress Dec. 8, 2009, at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. Airmen work around the clock at a "forward operation" during an operational readiness inspection to determine the ability to rapidly deploy assets and personnel. Sergeant Norton is assigned to the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

The weapons did not leave USAF custody and were secured at Barksdale.

Independence Bowl Dec. 28 following the national anthem.
As a special feature the B-52 was carrying the Litening II targeting pod that focused on the Barksdale Honor Guard on the field. The live video feed was integrated into the Independence Bowl Jumbotron.

participate in Red Flag 09-5, an intense two-week combat scenario exercise. Red Flag is conducted on the 15,000-square-mile Nevada Test and Training Range, north of Las Vegas.
The exercise is one of a series of advanced training programs administered by the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center and Nellis, through the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

This will be an unprecedented length of service for a military aircraft.

Additionally, a proposed variant of the B-52H was the EB-52.
This version would have modified and augmented 16 B-52H airframes with additional electronic jamming capabilities.

A B-52 Stratofortress flies over the RAIDR 21 Remembrance Ceremony held July 21 at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. More than 200 Airmen, friends and family members attended the ceremony to remember the six fallen aircrew members who died in a crash July 21, 2008, while deployed to Andersen AFB, Guam. The call-sign of their B-52 was RAIDR 21.
