leading passenger and cargo airlines, announced today its consolidated financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2009. "LAN" or "the Company" makes reference to the consolidated entity, which includes passenger and cargo airlines in Latin America. All figures were prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and are expressed in U.S. dollars.


HIGHLIGHTS

-- LAN reported net income of US$4.2 million for the second quarter 2009. This represents a 93.0% decrease compared to net income of US$60.5 million in the second quarter 2008. These results were impacted by a US$52.6 million fuel hedging loss recognized during the quarter, while results for the second quarter of 2008 included a fuel hedge gain of US$29.2 million.

-- Excluding the impact of fuel hedging, operating income reached US$87.6 million in the second quarter 2009, a 56.2% increase compared to US$56.1 million in the second quarter 2008. Furthermore, the operating margin excluding hedging losses reached 11.2% in the second quarter 2009 as compared to 5.6% in the second quarter 2008, which represents a significant increase in LAN's operating efficiency, especially considering that the second quarter is seasonally the weakest of the year.

-- Continuing with the expansion and renewal of its fleet, during the second quarter 2009, LAN received two new Boeing 777 freighters. LAN Cargo is the first carrier in the region to operate this aircraft, the most modern and efficient freighter of its type.

-- During the quarter LAN completed a round of financing initiated in March 2009, raising an additional US$210 million through bank loans in the Chilean market, reaching a total of US$250 million in bilateral loans with five local banks. These loans have a three year tenor and attractive interest rates, and will be used to increase the Company's liquidity position. At the end of the second quarter, LAN had a total of US$700 million in cash and cash equivalents, representing 18.0% of last twelve month revenues.
Furthermore, LAN is in the final stage of securing long-term financing for three Boeing 767 aircraft to be delivered between 2009 and 2010. This financing is expected to be supported by the US EX-IM Bank.

-- In line with LAN's continued commitment to expand its route network and improve connectivity for passengers traveling within the region, during the second quarter LAN launched service from its Lima hub to Cartagena de Indias,
Colombia two times per week. In addition, on July 10, LAN initiated daily service from Santiago to Lima via Iquique. On August 15, the Company will operate Lima - Cali via Quito three times per week. As for its domestic operations, LAN Argentina incorporated a new route from Buenos Aires to Tucuman with 13 weekly frequencies. In addition, LAN

continued developing its domestic routes in that market, currently operating 46 weekly frequencies between Quito and Guayaquil as well as daily service between Guayaquil and Cuenca.

In addition, LAN was recognized as the most respected company in Chile in the annual ranking by local newspaper La Segunda and Adimark GFK, based on the opinion of respected Chilean business executives.

Lan Airlines group se porte plutôt pas mal coté trafic mais capacité offerte en hausse.

LAN Airlines S.A. and its subsidiaries, ("LAN" or "the Company") (NYSE: LFL / IPSA: LAN), one of the leading airlines in Latin America, today reported its preliminary monthly traffic statistics and punctuality indicators for August 2009.

System passenger traffic for August increased 4.4% as capacity rose 7.4%. As a result, the Company's load factor decreased 2.2 points to 76.5%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 70% of total passenger traffic.

Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador rose 10.2% as capacity increased 17.3%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the month decreased 4.7 points to 73.4%.

International passenger traffic for August rose 2.1% as capacity increased 3.5%.
Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month decreased 1.1 points to 77.8%. International capacity was mainly driven by an increase in operations on routes to Europe and the South Pacific, which was partially offset by a decrease on certain regional routes.

In line with the decrease in global import and export markets, during the month of August cargo traffic decreased 4.2%. This decrease was mainly due to a slowdown in import and export markets in Latin America, partially offset by an increase in exports from Peru to the United States, as well as by an increase in operations to and from Europe
resulting from the addition of two new B777F. Capacity remained unchanged compared to August 2008, generating a 3.0 point decrease in the load factor to 69.0%.

During August, 92.6% of the Company's total flights left on time based on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as "on-time"). This represented an increase of 6.3 points compared to August 2008.

Reporting / compta aux normes IFRS


Net income : $52,1 million ( $83,0 pour 2008)

Hors revenus et charges exceptionnelles : - 58,3%

Fuel hedges ( couverture carburant) ont impactés lourdement le résultat

En excluant cet item, la marge opérationnelle aurait été de 11,6% ( 12,5 en 2008 mêmes conditions)

Opérations de financements pour acquisition d’avions :

-- During the quarter, LAN completed important financing initiatives with the objective of ensuring the Company's long-term growth plans.

LAN finalized securing long-term financing for three Boeing 767 aircraft to be delivered between 2009 and 2010.

This financing is expected to be supported by the US EX-IM Bank.
Furthermore, LAN is in the final stage of securing financing for three spare engines, to be supported also by the US EX-IM Bank.

In addition, the Company arranged bank financing for Pre Delivery Payments (PDP's) related to 15 Airbus A320 family aircraft to be delivered between 2010 and 2011.

These financing initiatives include attractive interest rates that are in line with LAN's average cost of debt.
LAN's solid financial position and ample liquidity continue to be reflected in the Company's BBB Investment Grade international credit rating (Fitch).

Chile's LAN for the seventh consecutive year has registered double-digit growth in full-year passenger traffic,
reporting an 11% increase in RPKs and a 16% increase in passengers boarded for 2009.

The Latin American airline group says in a statement today that it carried 15.4 million passengers in 2009, a 16% increase compared with 2008.
Fast-growing LAN has now tripled its passenger traffic since 2002.

Most of the growth last year was driven by domestic expansion. LAN, which now operates domestically in Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Peru, carried 9.7 million domestic passengers in 2009.

This represents a 21% increase compared to the 8 million domestic passengers carried in 2008.

Internationally, the carrier's passenger count also grew by 9% from 5.2 million to 6.7 million passengers.

On an RPK basis LAN's traffic grew 11% to 29.8 million RPKs.

This included a 21% increase domestically and a 7% increase internationally.

LAN grew capacity by 11% in 2009 to 38.8 billion million ASKs.
This included a 22% increase domestically and a 6% increase internationally.

As a result LAN's system-wide load factor improved from 76.6% in 2008 to 76.9% in 2009.

Domestically the company's load factor slipped from 76% to 74.9%, but on international routes the load factor improved from 76.9% to 77.8%.

While LAN was able to continue its run of double-digit growth in passenger traffic, a streak it began back in 2003, the carrier's cargo traffic dropped in 2008 for the first time since 2002.

LAN registered a 10% drop in RTKs for 2009 to 2.6 billion on a 6% decrease in capacity.

LAN, which remained in the black during the first nine months of 2009, plans to report its full-year financial results on 26 January.

Cette loi chilienne est intéressante, sans parti pris, mais vu de la France...

LAN Airlines reste profitable en 2009, le modèle d'affaire est bon, la stratégie claire et stable autant qu'il est possible.
Les pertes imputables aux fuel hedges : qui peut, aujourd'hui, partout dans le monde acceptant des règles de transparence comptable, donner un avis sur "cequ'il faut ou ne faut pas faire ?

Chaque cas est particulier et il n'y a pourtant pas 50 manières d'acheter du jet kero.

On notera aussi l'apparition de 2 B777F, par ailleurs. Et la flotte d'A 340-300 est passée de 7 à 5

LAN Airlines recorded a net profit of $231.1 million in 2009, down 31.3% from the $336.5 million earned in 2008, a result it claimed demonstrated "the strength of the company's business model and LAN's resiliency to external shocks."

Last year's result was impacted by a $128.7 million fuel hedging loss that compared to a $35.4 million gain in 2008.

Revenue fell 14.7% to $3.66 billion, a drop driven by a 7% decline in passenger revenue resulting from lower fuel surcharges and pricing promotions designed to stimulate demand plus a 32.1% plunge in cargo revenue.

Expenses were cut 12.1% to $3.22 billion.

Operating profit slipped 29.7% to $435.7 million.

The Chilean company flew 29.83 billion RPKs last year, up 10.7%, against a 10.2% lift in capacity to 38.78 billion ASKs.

Load factor rose 0.3 point to 76.9% and passenger numbers climbed 16.3% to 15.4 million.

Yield declined 16% to 8.8 cents and unit revenue was down 15.6% to 6.8 cents.

LAN plans a 10% lift in capacity in 2010, plus a 16%-18% rise in cargo capacity driven by increased utilization.

Its fleet at the end of 2009 comprised 15 A318-100s, 20 A319-100s, 18 A320-200s, 27 767-300ERs, five A340-300s, nine 767-300Fs and two 777-200Fs.

Fourth-quarter net profit of $109.8 million was up 17.6% from the $93.3 million in the year-ago quarter.
Operating profit fell 10.9% to $190.3 million on a 4% slip in revenue to $1.07 billion.
