Kennedy and embarked Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) are taking part in missions supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom during her deployment supporting the Navy's new Fleet Response Plan (FRP) Summer Pulse 2004.

Summer Pulse 2004 is the simultaneous deployment of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs), demonstrating the ability of the Navy to provide credible combat across the globe, in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces. Three U.S. Navy McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet fighters from strike fighter squadron VFA-83 Rampagers fly in formation over the desert during "Operation Desert Storm" on 3 February 1991.
VFA-83 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-60) for a deployment to the Mediterranean and the Red Sea in support of operations "Desert Shield" and "Desert Storm" from 7 August 1990 to 28 March 1991.

Ten U.S. Navy McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet fighters of strike fighter squadron VFA-86 Sidewinders flying in formation near Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida (USA), led by Cmdr. Russell Ziegler, commanding officer of VFA-86.

The squadron was homeported at NAS Cecil Field, Florida, and was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1) aboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66).

From 28 August 1995 to 24 February 1996 America made her last deployment before her decomissioning to the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.
