Re: Emirates : EK : UAE
Tim Clark, president of Emirates Group, has said the Dubai business community is "shocked" by the financial crisis.
However he said the community had insisted that the restructuring at Dubai World will not affect the wider economy.
The British boss of Dubai's flagship airline told The Sunday Telegraph:
"We are all a bit shocked by what's happened and the global fall-out of the past 48 hours. But Dubai will navigate itself out of this, as will we. I am confident that the airline will not be affected by this."
He confirmed that Emirates, which is one of the global aviation industry's biggest customers with 120 aircraft on order at the moment, has no intention of cancelling any orders. Mr Clark, who has lived in Dubai for 25 years, said the company's finances were on solid ground and had not been affected by the debt crisis.
"We have independent sukuks [Islamic bonds] and bonds which are maturing in 2010 and 2011. I know people expect us to repay or refinance them on schedule and we will, most absolutely," he said.
Mr Clark admitted that Dubai could face a tough time in the coming months as Dubai World is restructured but that the other state-controlled businesses were prepared.
"If there is more turbulence then we will moderate our growth to account for this but we're not going to stop growing, this is a great business," he said.
Emirates is dubbed the "jewel in the crown" of Dubai's assets. As one of the first company's established by the Al Maktoum ruling family, Emirates is also considered to be the most mature and globally diverse.
The airline, which has a fleet of 130 aircraft, only relies on the UAE for 17pc of its business, the rest is international. It is thought to generate between £15m and £20m net profits each week.

Merci Jeanot !

Middle Eastern carrier Emirates is to open [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] services to Saudi Arabia, with operations to Jeddah early next year.
The Dubai-based airline will deploy the aircraft on the route to the pilgrimage gateway city from 1 February.
It has a daily service to Jeddah but will operate the A380 four times per week.
Emirates will operate the 517-seat version of the aircraft to Jeddah. The jet will have 14 first-class, 76 business-class and 427 economy-class seats.
"Adding an A380 onto this perpetually busy route will significantly increase our capacity," says Emirates senior vice-president for Gulf commercial operations Ahmed Khoory.
Emirates will have seven A380s in its fleet by the end of this year, and its network of A380 routes will cover Sydney, Auckland, London Heathrow, Bangkok, Toronto, Seoul and Paris.
