Iberia : IB : IBE

In Latin America both ASKs and RPKs fell around 3.4% and load factor remained stable at 85.3%.
In North Atlantic load factor improved 0.8 points to 87.5%, after a reduction of capacity of 11.5%.
In Europe load factor improved 5.3 points with respect to the previous year, reaching 81.1%, with a drop of 5.5% in traffic and a decrease in capacity of 11.6%. In this segment unit revenues showed a significant reduction. In European flights with origin or destination Madrid, traffic went down 1.4% and load factor improved 4.8 percentage points.
In Africa and the Middle East capacity grew by 4% and traffic went down by 0.3% with respect to the same period in 2008. Load factor reached 71.2% (-3.0 points).
In the domestic sector, load factor rose by 3,7 points to 76,6%, demand decreased 4.8% and capacity 9.5%, with lower reductions in the flights between Madrid and Barcelona.

Total load factor stood at 82.4%, 1.8 points below August 2008, with a decrease of 4.4% in capacity and 6.5% in traffic (measured in RPK).
The company is gradually curbing the fall in yields, although demand is still weak, especially in the business segment, and is quite sensitive to prices, mainly in the long haul.
In the long haul the load factor reached 83.4% (-4.3 points compared to the previous year); capacity -measured in available seat kilometre (ASK)- dropped 3.2% and RPK fell by 7.9%.
In August, as in July, the mix improved compared with the deterioration suffered in first half of the year; thus, the Business Plus passengers reached the same weight over total traffic than one year earlier.
In Latin America, the load factor stood at 82.0% (-4.7 points), with a reduction of 1.4% in ASK. We expect further capacity adjustments in the next months.
In the North Atlantic, the load factor reached 89.3% (-2.2 points); capacity reduced by 8.4% and traffic went down 10.6%, with an important improvement in the mix.
The European load factor improved by 1.0 points, to 83.0%, as RPK dropped (-8.8%) in a lower proportion than ASK (-9.9%); the average stage length grew by 4.3% compared to August 2008.
In European flights to/from Madrid the capacity cuts were smaller (-6.6%) and traffic fell by -5.6%, improving the
load factor by 0.9 points.
In Africa and the Middle East, traffic rose by 4.3% and capacity went up 8.4%; consequently, the load factor stood at 77.4% (-3.1 points).
The Domestic load factor improved by 4.7 points on the previous year, reaching 78.6%; traffic went up 2.8%, mainly driven by traffic increases in flights to the Canary Islands, and capacity fell by 3.3%, as a result of the adjustments
carried out in the mainland.
Highlights
* The Company has reorganised its top management structure in order to reinforce its competitive position.
The Airline Division is split into two new management units: a Commercial and Clients Division, focusing on generating income and to be headed by the current manager of the Maintenance and Engineering Division, Manuel López Aguilar; and a Production Division, charged with enhancing operations, and to be managed by the head of the current production management unit, Juan Bujía.
In addition, a new Purchasing and Services Division has been created, to be led by José María Fariza, previously responsible for control and administration with the aim of rationalising expenditures. Lastly, José Luis Ruiz de Castañeda de la Llave, currently Iberia’s industrial maintenance unit manager, has been appointed manager of the
Maintenance and Engineering Division.
* From 9 September all Iberia and its partners operate in the new Terminal 1 of Barcelona-El Prat. This new location allows a reduction of 10 minutes in flights from Madrid to Barcelona, due to the reduction of the taxiing time.
Likewise, the Air Shuttle customers will enjoy exclusive facilities that will speed up the service. Iberia and its partners will offer 336 daily flights to 43 domestic and international destinations from this terminal, representing the highest number of operations at Barcelona airport.
* Iberia has signed an agreement to sponsor the candidacy of the city of Madrid as host of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016.

Résultats globaux septembre d'IB. RPK -8,1% et ASK -6,3
D'Airtransportnews :
Load factor stood at 79.0% in the overall network, 1.6 points below the level reached one year ago.
Traffic -measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK)- went down 8.1% and capacity was reduced by 6.3%.
The company increased the capacity adjustment to adapt to the market, still very affected by a weak demand and by a widespread reduction in fares.
In the long haul segment, capacity -measured in available seat kilometre (ASK)- dropped 5.3%, traffic fell by 9.0% and load factor stood at 81.3% (-3.3 points). Mix deterioration has reduced compared to the first half of the year, although business traffic continues to be weak and sensitive to prices.
In Latin America, the company adjusted capacity by -6.4% and RPK trimmed 10.2%, leading to a load factor of 82.1% (-3.5 points).
In North America ASK climbed 1.7%, with the same frequencies than in preceding months. Total RPK declined by 1.6%, leading to a load factor of 78.5% (-2.6 points).
European load factor improved 3.3 points with respect to the previous year, reaching 79.1%, with a decrease in capacity of 9.6% and a decline in traffic of 5.7%. In European flights to/from Madrid were lower the capacity cuts (-5.6%) and the drop in traffic (-2.3%). Load factor improved 2.7 points.
In Africa and the Middle East capacity narrowed 2.1% (mainly due to some adjustments in Israel) and traffic fell 3.0%, reaching the load factor 73.7% (-0.6 points).
Domestic load factor reached 70.0% (-2.6 points), with a reduction in ASK of 5.8% and in the traffic of 9.2%. It was remarkable the bad behaviour of the traffic in Barcelona-Madrid and in the flights between Iberian Peninsula and the Canary and Balearic Islands.
In the third quarter of 2009 and for the overall network, load factor stood at 82.1%, 1.1 points below the level reached one year ago, with decreases of 4.8% in the capacity and of 6.0% in the traffic.
Highlights
* Iberia has been selected, for the fourth consecutive year, for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), a listing of the companies rated highest for ethical business, environmental protection, and corporate social responsibility practices.
Iberia’s corporate social responsibility policies also won recognition for the ETHIBEL Sustainability Index/Excellence Europe, and KEMPEN SNS-SRI Universe, indexes which recognise the best practices in Corporate Social Responsibility. It was also included, for the second year, in the FTSE4Good Ibex.
* Iberia and SAS Scandinavian Airlines have reached an agreement whereby Iberia will carry out major maintenance operations (C and D checks) of the MD-80s and Airbus A-330s and A-340s operated by the Scandinavian airline.
Iberia and GOL, the second largest airline in Brazil, have announced today that the airlines have signed a code-share agreement that will enable the Spanish airline to increase significantly its offer in Brazil.
Currently, Iberia flies twice a day between Madrid and Sao Paulo and offers one flight daily between the Spanish capital and Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil is one of the most important markets for Iberia. Under the code-share agreement, Iberia can add
its code to GOL flights from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to 13 Brazilian destinations: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Florianopolis, Fortaleza, Foz do Iguaçu, Goiania, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador de Bahia and Vitoria.
Before implementing the agreement, the Brazilian authorities (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil – ANAC -, the Brazilian aviation authority, and the Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica – CADE-, the antitrust counsel) have to approved it.
Additionally to the code share agreement, the airlines are also evaluating the possibility of linking their frequent flyer programs, Iberia Plus and GOL’s SMILES.
Iberia Plus cardholders will be able then to add points on any GOL flight, while the Smiles cardholders will win points when flying with Iberia.

Load factor improved by 3.0 points reaching 79.0 per cent, a record level for December in Iberia’s history.
With a reduction of 6.4 per cent in capacity, similar to that registered in the last three months, traffic decreased by 2.7 per cent, thanks to the positive evolution of demand on intercontinental flights.
Unit revenues also recovered, although standing below last year’s figures.
In long haul, load factor improved by 3.5 points standing at 85.0 per cent.
Traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), was similar to the previous year (-0.2 per cent), while capacity went down 4.3 per cent.
For the first time in the year the number of Business Plus passengers was higher than the figure of 2008 (+0.4 per cent).
In Latin America the load factor improved by 3.1 points reaching 85.3 per cent, as ASK dropped by 3.5 per cent and traffic remained stable (+0.1 per cent).
In the North Atlantic the load factor improved by 5.3 points, to 83.9 per cent, as traffic decreased (-1.3 per cent) in a lower proportion than capacity (-7.5 per cent);
this drop in ASK was due to adjustments in some routes and the use of smaller aircraft in some flights.
In Europe the load factor went up 3.2 points, to 69.5 per cent, decreasing traffic by 9.9 per cent, while ASK reduced by 14.1 per cent, due to the adjustments made in some point to point routes.
In European flights to/from Madrid, the decreases in traffic and capacity were lower (-4.7 per cent and -8.3 per cent respectively), improving the load factor by 2.6 points.
In Africa and the Middle East traffic grew by 3.4 per cent, against a 4.8 per cent drop in capacity, standing the load factor at 73.6 per cent, 5.8 points above the previous year.
The domestic load factor stood at 66.7 per cent (-1.9 points), as capacity went down 3.6 per cent and traffic dropped by 6.3 per cent; flights between the mainland and the Canary Islands registered the worst performance.
In the accumulated 2009, the load factor stood at 79.8 per cent, decreasing slightly (-0.2 points) as capacity and traffic fell proportionally (-6.0 per cent and -6.2 per cent respectively).
