The Curtiss Y1A-18 was an improved version of the [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien].
The XA-14 made its first flight in July 1935, and a year later the Air Corps ordered 13 service test aircraft.
These aircraft were designated Y1A-18 because of an engine change.
The XA-14 has Wright R-1670-5 Whirlwind engines, and the Y1A-18s had Wright R-1820-47 Cyclone radial engines.
The new engines were more powerful, but the gross weight of the aircraft was higher so the performance was roughly the same as the XA-14.

Curtiss developed the aircraft under the company designation Model 76A with the nickname Shrike.
The Shrike nickname was assigned to six separate attack aircraft: A-8, A-10, A-12, A-14, A-18 and A-25.
Curtiss used a similar naming scheme for its Hawk series of pursuit planes and Falcon series of observation and attack aircraft.
The Army Air Corps never used the Shrike nickname for any of its aircraft.

The first Y1A-18 was delivered for testing in midsummer 1937.
The aircraft performed well, but no further orders were placed for two primary reasons.
First, the aircraft were expensive and the Air Corps budget of the mid to late 1930s could not support a large A-18 order.
Second, improved twin-engine attack aircraft were in the planning stages (notably the Douglas A-20) which would
make the A-18 obsolete in a short time.

Nevertheless, the prototype was able to achieve a maximum speed of 254 mph (409 km/h), outstripping the frontline [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] by 20 mph (32 km/h).
Re-engined with 735 hp (550 kW) Curtiss R-1670-5 engines, it was delivered to the Army under serial number 36-146.

Thirteen aircraft were produced, serial numbers 37-52 through 37-64, and although successful in testing, further production was not ordered due to a lack of funds and the availability of more advanced aircraft

After completion of service testing, the Y1A-18s were assigned to operational attack groups and redesignated A-18.
