Air China expects its half-year net profits to increase by at least 50% due to falling jet fuel prices and stronger demand for air travel.

The Star Alliance member says in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange that it made a net profit of 1.28 billion yuan ($187.4 million) in the first six months of 2008. Based on this, the state-owned carrier says it is likely to report profits of at least 1.92 billion yuan for the six months ended 30 June.

"The expected increase in profit is mainly due to the favourable conditions such as a fall in fuel purchase cost...a stable growth in the domestic air passenger market, implementation of industry support policies prescribed by the state and effective cost control by the company," says Air China.


It added that a 57% increase in oil prices in the first half of 2009 helped it to reduce paper losses on hedging contracts and will boost profits.

The Beijing-based carrier also posted a 7% increase in traffic in May, spurred on by growth in the domestic market.

Boosted by a domestic market that "did better than expected," Air China reported a CNY2.82 billion ($411.8 million) profit in the first six months of 2009 under IFRS, more than double the restated CNY1.05 billion earned in the year-ago semester.

Half-year revenue fell 9.6% to CNY23.11 billion but costs declined 20.9% to CNY20.29 billion, boosting CA's operating result to a CNY2.82 billion profit from the CNY83.7 million loss suffered in the first six months of 2008. Fuel costs were down 42.5% and the company realized a CNY1.45 billion gain from changes in the fair value of its fuel hedges. Its airline segment produced a CNY2.88 billion profit compared to
CNY846.1 million last year.

The carrier credited Beijing's "policy of spurring domestic demand and related measures taken by the industry to fight
the financial crisis." It raised capacity 21.2% to 27.92 billion ASKs and saw traffic rise 18.7% to 21.23 billion RPKs. Domestic passenger numbers grew 18.2% to 15.8 million but groupwide load factor dropped 1.6 points to 75.7%.

Difficulties on the international front continued [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien], with flights to Athens and several South Korean destinations suspended and frequencies cut on routes to Japan, Korea, Europe and North America. It flew 14.6 billion international RPKs, down 9.4%, against a 9% cut in capacity to 20.15 billion ASKs. Load factor dropped 0.4
point to 72.5%.

CA took delivery of 10 aircraft during the semester and retired 11 and has cut its planned full-year capital expenditure by nearly 20%. It said it "anticipates the impact of the global financial crisis on international air passenger and cargo business will continue" through year end as "the overly rapid increase in traffic capacity by the domestic airlines and the intensified price competition will affect the ability of the company to improve its yield."

Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines enjoyed a financial turnaround in the third quarter owing to a strong recovery in the domestic market and gains on their fuel hedges.
CA earned net income of CNY885.3 million ($129.5 million) in the quarter, a significant reversal from the CNY1.94 billion loss suffered in the year-ago period, on a 1.3% lift in operating revenue to CNY14.05 billion. Expenses dropped 10.6% to CNY13.45 billion and the Beijing-based airline reported a CNY554 million profit on its fuel hedges for the period.
China Eastern posted a net profit of CNY23.2 million, reversed from a loss of CNY2.33 billion. A fuel hedge gain of CNY154 million was a key driver of the result.
China Southern was CNY284 million in the black compared to an CNY810 million deficit in the 2008 quarter. Revenue rose 9.5% year-over-year to CNY15.95 billion and expenses dropped 5% to CNY13.37 billion. CZ cited "effective cost control" and the "return of the civil aviation construction fund" as reasons for the improvement.
The Big Three were profitable through the first nine months of 2009 as well thanks to government aid that helped carry them through the recession. CA posted a CNY3.81 billion profit through September; it received a government subsidy of CNY962 million. CZ reported net income of CNY322 million during the period thanks to CNY1.56 billion in government aid, and CEA was CNY1.2 billion in the black as of Sept. 30.
Despite the results, local analysts continue to say that China's airlines still suffer from overcapacity and inefficiencies. "Domestic demand keeps rising, but airfares are still plummeting and Chinese carriers' international routes have been hit hard by swine flu," an industry insider told ATWOnline, adding that the trio's fourth-quarter profits will fall from third-quarter levels.

Air China posted a 14.9% increase in passenger traffic in December, with regional traffic registering the strongest growth.
Domestic RPKs rose 12.5%, international RPKs increased 17.2% and regional RPKs jumped 28.5%, says the airline.
Air China's regional figures refer to traffic from Hong Kong and Macau.
In real terms, the total number of passengers grew 14.1% to 3.2 million. Domestic passenger numbers rose 12.2% to 2.6 million, international passenger numbers grew 21.1% to 485,600 and regional numbers increased 36% to 116,600.
Overall capacity, as measured by ASKs, rose 11.3%. Domestic ASKs grew 10.2%, international ASKs rose 12.2% and regional ASKs increased 19.5%, says the airline.
As a result, the overall passenger load factor grew 2.4 percentage points to 75.9%. The domestic passenger load factor was up 1.6 percentage points to 74.1%, the international passenger load factor grew 3.4 percentage points to 78.8% and the regional passenger load factor jumped 5.2 percentage points to 74.3%.
In terms or cargo, overall revenue freight tonne kilometres (RFTKs) grew 41.7%, says the airline. Domestic RFTKs rose 22.1%, international RFTKs 47.3% and regional RFTKs 105.8%

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Air China Ltd. said it entered into an agreement with Airbus Co. to buy 20 Airbus 320 series aircraft.

The basic price for the airplanes is $1.63 billion and the company received significant price concessions, the Chinese airline said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange today.

The company will take delivery of the aircraft from 2011 to 2014, according to the statement. The new aircraft will strengthen the fleet capacity of the company by 5 percent compared with December 2009, based on available tonne kilometers and will mainly support the building of hubs in Chengdu and expand capacity in southwest China, the company said.

Pour les moteurs, Air CHINA a été client d'IAE jusqu'ici.

Air China agrees to purchase 20 more A320s

Air China has agreed to purchase 20 Airbus A320 aircraft for delivery between 2011 and 2014.
The Chinese carrier has disclosed the agreement in a stock exchange statement. It says that the deal was concluded with Airbus today.
Air China gives the basic price of the aircraft as $1.6 billion but states that the airframer has granted "significant price concessions".
Acquisition of the twin-jets, it adds, will increase its fleet capacity by 5% from its end-2009 level.
"In particular, the transaction will mainly support hub-building in Chengdu and expand the fleet capacity of the company in southwestern China while supplementing, to an appropriate extent, the flights in eastern China," says the airline.

Aperçu intéressant de la stratégie.

No engine selection has been given. The carrier's current A320-family fleet includes a mix of International Aero Engines V2500-powered and CFM International CFM56-powered aircraft.

La présence d'A320 à motorisation CFM-56 est une simple anomalie. Ces avions, avec cette mototisation représenent un vieille commande prévur pour la flotte de China South West.

CSW fut fusionné avec Air CHINA en 2002. La préférence d'Air CHINA, pour la motorisation de sa flotte de monocouloirs d'Airbus, semble bien être l'IAE V2500.

....... Airbus confirmed to ATWOnline that the contract dated yesterday covers aircraft that were part of the 2007 order from China Aviation Supplies Import and Export Group Corp. that were included in the manufacturer's 2008 order book.

-- Pas sûr ! Avec tout le "mic-mac Air CHINA / CHINA South West qui a engendré la flotte à motorisation mixte (CFM-56 / IAE V2500) de la famille A320, on peut récapituler comme suit :

• aujourd'hui, c'est l'IAE V2500 qui doit avoir la base installée la plus importante ;
  
• cela est devenu inévitable le jour où il avait été décidé de faire voler les A320 (ou A319) jusqu'au Tibet (aéroports "hot & high");
  
• le choix du V2500 s'est imposé, car le CFM-56 ne pouvait pas faire le job.

• Aujourd'hui, pour déterminer la sélection du moteur qu sera faite, il faudrait d'abord compter le nombre d'Airbus (monocouloirs) équipé respectivement de moteurs CFM-56 & IAE V2500.
