China Southern Airlines is doubling its services to Australia due to increasing demand.
The Guangzhou-based carrier will start a thrice-weekly non-stop Guangzhou-Melbourne service on 26 October, replacing its thrice-weekly one-stop service via Sydney.
A five-times weekly Guangzhou-Sydney service will be maintained, and this will increase to a daily service for the peak holiday travel season from 2 December to 20 February, says the carrier.

"Demand for travel to and from China is continuing to grow both from Sydney and Melbourne," says China Southern regional manager for Australia, James Liu. The services cater to tourist and business traffic, he adds.
China Southern also hopes to attract passengers who will transit in Guangzhou before travelling to other regions like northeast Asia and Europe, says Liu.

Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines enjoyed a financial turnaround in the third quarter owing to a strong recovery in the domestic market and gains on their fuel hedges.
CA earned net income of CNY885.3 million ($129.5 million) in the quarter, a significant reversal from the CNY1.94 billion loss suffered in the year-ago period, on a 1.3% lift in operating revenue to CNY14.05 billion. Expenses dropped 10.6% to CNY13.45 billion and the Beijing-based airline reported a CNY554 million profit on its fuel hedges for the period.
China Eastern posted a net profit of CNY23.2 million, reversed from a loss of CNY2.33 billion. A fuel hedge gain of CNY154 million was a key driver of the result.
China Southern was CNY284 million in the black compared to an CNY810 million deficit in the 2008 quarter. Revenue rose 9.5% year-over-year to CNY15.95 billion and expenses dropped 5% to CNY13.37 billion. CZ cited "effective cost control" and the "return of the civil aviation construction fund" as reasons for the improvement.
The Big Three were profitable through the first nine months of 2009 as well thanks to government aid that helped carry them through the recession. CA posted a CNY3.81 billion profit through September; it received a government subsidy of CNY962 million. CZ reported net income of CNY322 million during the period thanks to CNY1.56 billion in government aid, and CEA was CNY1.2 billion in the black as of Sept. 30.
Despite the results, local analysts continue to say that China's airlines still suffer from overcapacity and inefficiencies. "Domestic demand keeps rising, but airfares are still plummeting and Chinese carriers' international routes have been hit hard by swine flu," an industry insider told ATWOnline, adding that the trio's fourth-quarter profits will fall from third-quarter levels.

China Southern Airlines posted a double-digit increase in total passenger traffic for December despite a fall in international traffic.
Total RPKs for December rose 12% thanks to a 14% rise in domestic passenger traffic, says the Guangzhou-based carrier. International passenger traffic, however, fell 4%.
In real terms, total passenger numbers rose 14% to 5.5 million. Domestic passenger numbers increased 15% to 5 million but international passenger numbers dropped 2% to 353,000.
The carrier responded by slashing international capacity, as measured by ASKs, by 8% and increasing domestic capacity by 13%.
This led to a 1.6 percentage point increase in the passenger load factor to 74.1%. The domestic passenger load factor rose one percentage point to 74.8% and international load factor rose three percentage points to 70.9%.
China Southern's cargo business also had mixed results. Total cargo traffic fell 0.2% because international cargo traffic dropped 9%, but domestic cargo traffic rose 5%.

HONG KONG, 20 janvier (Reuters) - La compagnie aérienne China Southern a annoncé mercredi son intention d'acheter à Airbus 20 A320 pour un montant de 1,54 milliard de dollars (1,08 milliard d'euros).

Le transporteur chinois précise dans un communiqué que le prix catalogue de chaque appareil est de 76,9 millions de dollars (54,2 millions d'euros).

Le calendrier de livraison s'échelonne de 2011 à 2013.

China Southern ajoute que ses résultats pour l'année 2009 devraient être à nouveau bénéficiaires du fait de la baisse du prix du pétrole et de la reprise soutenue du nombre de passagers.

International Aero Engines announced today the delivery of the 100th V2500-powered A320 family aircraft to China Southern Airlines.
The 100th aircraft, an Airbus A321, is powered by the latest V2500 SelectOne build standard and is scheduled to fly both domestic and international routes. China Southern first operated the V2500 in 1996 with a Boeing MD-90 and has since logged over two million flying hours with this engine type.

Bob Zimmerman, Vice President – China said, “For over a decade, China Southern has flown with V2500 engines and have since grown to be one of the largest V2500 operators in the world. We are proud to be a part of China Southern’s success.”
In addition to the 100 V2500-powered Airbus aircraft now in service, China Southern has 29 further A320-family aircraft on order with IAE engines. Its fleet also consists of 13 MD-90s, powered by the V2500-D5 variant..

The Guangzhou-based carrier has not stated an engine selection. Its current A320-family jets are fitted with both CFM International CFM56s and International Aero Engines V2500s.

China Southern says that the acquisition will increase the company's capacity by 4.5% compared with that available at the end of 2009.
"The acquisition will facilitate the optimisation of the structures of the group's aircraft fleet and traffic capacity, thus enhancing the competitiveness and core competence of the group," it adds.
China Southern says that while the catalogue price for the twin-jets is $76.9 million each, the actual consideration is "significantly lower" because of concessions granted by the airframer.
It says that these concessions take the form of credit memoranda which could be used to purchase spare parts or other services from [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]. The overall consideration will be partly paid in cash, and partly through financing arrangements with banks.

The official delivery ceremony will be held in Toulouse Sunday, Feb. 14. Attending the ceremony on behalf of China Southern Airlines will be Mazhang Han, senior vice president, China Southern Airlines.

The 17th Airbus A320 is slated for delivery to China Southern Airlines on March 12.

The Airbus A320, delivered Thursday, uses two IAE V2500 engines.

Ranked No. 1 in passengers carried for the past 20 years, China Southern Airlines connects more than 90 cities around the globe through 10 regional bases in China. Major business and vacation destinations served in China include Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Guilin and Shantou with international service to Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Singapore, Osaka, Bangkok, Manila and Ho Chi Minh City.

China Southern Airlines plans to introduce 35 new aircraft this year, increasing its total fleet to 400 by 2011, according to GM Tan Wangeng.

He noted that the Guangzhou-based carrier will phase out older MD-90s and 757s.

It is scheduled to take delivery of its first A380 and 787 in 2011.

It has firm orders for five A380s and 10 787s.

Tan also said that CZ will move to enhance its position in Shenzhen following Air China's emergence as the new controlling stakeholder of Shenzhen Airlines.

It currently operates 25 aircraft at SZX and intends to add five A321s this year. Over the next five years it plans to allocate 25-30 additional aircraft.

It currently holds 30% of the Shenzhen market while CA increased its share to 43% with the acquisition of ZH.

Meanwhile, CZ plans to shift more attention to its international operation this year as China's high-speed rail network continues to impact domestic demand.

Tan revealed that it has deepened its cooperation with SkyTeam partner Air France KLM by establishing a Beijing-Amsterdam joint venture.
It is negotiating a similar agreement on Guangzhou-AMS service.

China Southern Airlines said that with the addition of an A330-200 delivered over the weekend, the combined fleet of CZ and its subsidiary and affiliate airlines now numbers 400 units, making it the sixth-biggest carrier in the world in terms of fleet size based on IATA data.

The Guangzhou-based carrier noted that its fleet will continue to grow.

It plans to take delivery of five A380s beginning in February 2011, which a CZ insider told ATW will be operated on routes to Europe and the US.

The company also is scheduled to introduce 10 787-8s starting from 2011, which are expected to be used on routes to the US. CZ operates more than 660 routes to more than 190 domestic and international destinations.

It carried 30.1 million passengers in the first five months of 2010, up 16%, while cargo traffic climbed 38% to 427,000 tonnes.

IAE International Aero Engines today announced that China Southern Airlines has again selected the V2500 to power a new fleet of 20 Airbus A320 family aircraft it has on order. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2011.
The contract also includes a long-term IAE Aftermarket Services agreement. The combined value of the engine and aftermarket business is in excess of $400 million.
The China Southern airline group is one of the largest operators of the V2500 with 136 aircraft in service, including 13 Boeing MD-90s and 123 Airbus A320 family aircraft. A further five
IAE-powered aircraft are yet to be delivered in addition to this latest order.

China Southern first operated the V2500 in 1996 and has since logged over three million flying hours with this engine type.
Mr. Tan Wangeng, President of China Southern said: “The V2500 has proven itself to be a highly reliable and it has contributed a lot to our reputation as the leading airline in China. Our decision to once again select the V2500 to power our new A320s will further enhance our long standing relationship with IAE.”

All of the airline’s V2500 engines on its A320 family aircraft are covered by a long-term IAE Aftermarket Services agreement, making it one of the largest customers to see the value in this type of long-term partnership with its engine manufacturer.

As part of its existing aftermarket agreement, China Southern has opted to upgrade its existing V2500-A5 fleet to the new
V2500 SelectOne™ build standard. Since the retrofit was introduced in late 2008, the airline has completed 26 upgrades to date.
